NEW ZEALAND ONE-MILE CHAMPIONSHIP

(PRESS ASSOCUTtOV TItRORAX.) DUNEDIN. February 14. Heats in the one mile New Zealand swimming championships, held this evening, resulted:---First Heat—L. Newell (Canterbury) 1, D. C. Berry (Southland) 2, R. Watkins (Hawke’s Bay) 3. Also started: W. Johnson (Auckland), J. Neville (Taranaki). Won by two yards each way. Time, 24min 24 l-9sec. Second Heat—C. Cliff (Canterbury) 1, J. D. O’Driscoll (Otago) 2, P, B. Malthus (Southland) 3. Also started: C, R. Buchanan (Auckland). Won by a touch: 40 yards between second and third. Time, 24min 10 2-ssec.

PAN-PACIFIC MEETING AT AUCKLAND

(PUSS 4.l«OCtinOV tUWUUIt.j DUNEDIN, February 14. At the annual conference of delegates from centres affiliated to the New Zealand Swimming Association, the president of the Otago Centre (Mr W., A. Jenkins) presided. On behalf of the Auckland centre, Mr J. Enwright presented the following remit*, which were taken together:— that no swimmer or Jwimmers ,be sent to the Olympic Gamely unices their times approach the Olympic standard, and that a strong representative team be sent to the British Empire Games In Australia in 1838. The remits were approved. Auckland presented a remit that the application of the Auckland Centre for permission to conduct a Pan-Paci; fic meeting during the Auckland centenary celebrations in 1940, as applied lor on December 7, 1985, be granted to the Auckland Centre by the council. Mr S. Hollander moved as an amendment that the matter be held over until Wellington and Auckland had conferred, and had advised the council as to the outcome. Mr Eippdn Seconded.. The amendment was lost, and the remit adopted. A further Auckland remit that the granting .of New Zealand senior championship meetings be limited to the Auckland, Hawke’s Bay; Wanganui, Wellington, Canterbury, South Canterbury, Otago, and Southland centres, and that intermediate and junior meetings be allotted to South Auckland, Taranaki, Manawatu, Nelson, West Coast, and Ashburton was lost An Auckland remit was adopted that in view of swimming and life-saving being subjects on the primary schools 1 curriculum, the Education Department be requested to make provision on the primary schools’ progress card to record pupils’ progress In these subjects before passing out of the primary schools. A Southland remit was adopted that swimming be niade compulsory in all schools; also that swimming be ' a necessary qualification for teachers. A South Auckland Centre remit that law 25, part 2, clause 2, be amended to permit a cup to be presented to New Zealand championship winners who would prefer to receive a cup rather than a medal was referred to the New Zealand Council for consideration. 1 v An Auckland remit was adopted that the ISO yards men’s New Zealand backstroke championship be replaced by a 100 yards event, to bring New Zealand more in line with the Olympic distance of 100 metres. ' A Wellington remit was adopted, that the Government be urged to restore the grant to the council for educational work; also that representations be made to the Railways Board, through the Government, to, restore concessions to jqniors and the intermediates attending championship meetings. • The 1237 senior championship meeting was allotted to Taranaki, and the Junior and Intermediate meeting to NelSon.

LEESTON SCHOOL SPORTS

KEEN CONTESTS FOR HERBERT SMITH TRUST CUPS fine weather favoured the annual swimming carnival of the Leeston School held on Thursday afternoon. There Was a good attendance of spectators, and entries were numerous, special interest was taken in the competitions over a. series of events lor the Herbert Smith Trust. Cups, and in two events for swimmers fully dressed. The carnival was controlled by the teaching staff. with the assistance of Messrs O. W. R. Osborne, X>. H. Reid, and T. J. Ramsey as judges. Mr W.
