CAR STRIKES POLE AT REDCLIFFS

TWO PASSENGERS ADMITTED TO HOSPITAL

When the car in which they were riding, struck an electric light pole in William street, Redcliffs, last evening, Mr and Mrs J. Bean, The Spur, Redcliffs, suffered injuries,' and Mrs Bean was taken to hospital in an unconscious condition. The driver of the car, A. J. Archbold, was also injured, and was sent to the hospital. A young boy, a son of Mr Colin Hart, of Redcliffs, escaped injury. Shortly after 5 o’clock Mr Archbold, who was demonstrating a new car, was driving with his passengers in a northerly direction along the Main road. When he was turning into William street, the car mounted the footpath on the wrong side of the road and travelling about half, a chain, struck an electric light pole squarely in the middle of the car. Mrs Bean, who was in the back of the car, was thrown violently forward against Mr Archbold, and received head injuries which rendered her unconscious. Mr Bean was cut badly about the face and Mr Archbold was severely bruised by the steering wheel, which bent underneath him. The car’s windscreen was shattered, the lamps were twisted, and the metal work on the front of the car was a crumpled wreck. The impact was not sufficient to bring down the electric light pole, but it was moved five feet from the perpendicular, and the wires were broken. , Dr. R. F. Bakewell, of Sumner, was summoned, and ordered Mrs Bean and Mr Archbold to be removed to the Hospital in the St. John Ambulance. Mrs Bean was reported to be still unconscious and her condition to be very serious late last evening.

WAIROA, February 14, Ray Nicoison, aged 34 years, a single man. who met with a serious accident on the afternoon of February 11 at the Waikaremoana power works, died in the Wairoa hospital this morning. Further ■particulars show that, when he came in contact with a 50,000-volt line, he had his clothing enveloped in flames. As a result he was stripped of all his clothing except his boots and socks. A fellow-employee ‘ suffered burns in putting out the flames. Nicoison resembled a human torch. Frightful injuries and shock were suffered, but Nicoison retained consciousness practically up fo the time of his death.

HEAVY FALL OP SAND

FARMER SEVERELY INJURED

Buried under a fall of about eight tons of sand and severely injured, a farmer, George Gillman, aged 50, and married, narrowly escaped death by suffocation on the Taurangaruru road, five miles from Waiuku. Gillman was saved by the efforts of a companion, J. Short, jun., of Waipipi, who escaped the fall of sand and dug desperately to get the injured man’s head free, enabling him- to breathe. Gillman, who lives at Taurangaruru, was later admitted to the Auckland Hospital with internal injuries, and his condition, was fairly serious.

STRUCK BY TAXI

Duncan McKay was struck by a taxi at the comer of Colombo and Hutcheson streets last evening. He was admitted to the Public Hospital suffering from shock.

INJURIES TO HEAD

James Orr, of Durham street, fell over a ladder at his home last evening. He suffered head injuries, for which he was treated as an out-pati-ent at the Public Hospital.

ACCIDENT CAUSED BY DOG

Knocked off her bicycle by her dog near her home in Tutton’s road, Papanui,' Mrs Dallow suffered a fracture of the left wrist last evening. She was taken to the Public Hospital, where she was treated as an’ outpatient and discharged.
