Mr alia Mrs Edwyn Wilding (Te Mania, Conway) will come ’to Christchurch to-morrow to visit Mr and Mrs F, Wilding, “Fownhope,” Opawa. Mrs J. Campbell Gebbie, who is the guest of Mrs H, L. Mrs Edward Harris (St. Elmo Courts) left yesterday to visit friends in South Canterbury and Oamaru. Mrs Claude McCargle, with, her family, has returned to Pahiatua alter speeding a holiday with her father, Mr J. A. Thomson, Park road, North Beach. Mrs 8., Mitchell, Sumner, announces the engagement of her daughter Inez Dulcie to Clarence John, only son of Mrs and the late Mr J. Cumberpatch, Wembley street. New shades for autumn wear include tea dust, moon-white, underglaze red and petrol blue, the first two of which have been inspired by the Chinese exhibition at the Royal Academy, London. Petrol blue is a deep greenish-blue, and is often allied with, pewter coloured trimming. Another blue and grey partnership is lapis lazuli and oyster. The statement recently made by the Home Secretary that the number of policewomen attached to the Metropolitan Police Force in London is to be increased by degrees from fiO or 70 to 142 is likely to set women of all classes reflecting on the advantages or drawbacks of taking up this career. There is work in the force for women-of all classes who have the required qualifications. They should be between the ages of 24 and 35, free from physical defects, and healthy, ‘ unmarried, or*of widows, without dependent children. Many of the women already in the force have university degrees. Arrangements are being made by a special sub-committee of the Women and Girls’ Employment Committee for a gathering in honour of Mrs D. G. Sullivan, as it is, felt that her services to the community should be recognised. The sub-committee, which was appointed at the last meeting of the Employment Committee, consists of Mrs C. W. Barrell, Miss Havelaar, and Mrs W. F. Kent-Johnson (convener). A public meeting will be arranged for next week to discuss arrangements.
