DANGERS OF MARKING

DISCUSSION BY GERALDINE BOROUGH COUNCIL

(SPECIAL TO rax PRESS.) I' GERALDINE, Febniary ;13, ■: Incorrect marking of white lipes oh roads at dangerous corners was- discussed by the Geraldine Borough Council last evening, when, exception was taken by some councillors to criticism made at the recent meeting of the Geraldine County Council, concerning the manner in which, a line had - been marked by the borough authorities on the road at the south end' of the Geraldine traffic bridge. . The subject was introduced by Cr. Z. O. Sherratt, who asked if they could Obtain a definite boundary to the county road. Cr. E, D. B. Logan, chairroah of the works committee, reported , that the county engineer had complained about the lines marked out at the south, end. of the bridge, and had suggested that the lines indicated by .the county engineer should be adopted. It appeared that although the borough owned: the reserves on each side of. the road the county claimed a portion of the road, but the borough had looked after the water race at the side. If the county did not claim the road it was not entitled to nut any marks on it The borough foreman, acting undfer instructions, and by the advice of the local police officer, had marked the white line in the middle-of the bitumen. Be understood the county engineer Md put the duplicate line at the centre- of the road. •. . The Mayor (Mr B. R. Macdonald); I understand it was a~ county rowJ, put by some means it .was .brought into’ the borough. . " Cr. A. J. Bell: I think It was childish on Mr F. R. Flatman’s part'to find fault at the county council meeting about the marking of the road. - - Cr. P. H. Davis: I endorse what Cr; Bell has said and take exception to Mr Flatman’s remarks. Cr. Bell said that the marks-drove the south-bound cars too close into the stone wall. It was also, dangerous for pedestrians. Work in with Comity Cr. Lack: I think we should follow the county engineer’s suggestion. We want to work in with the countv council. The Mayor: Absolutely, The simplest way is to write to the county council to ask them if they will be responsible for the road, Cr. Lack; 1 suggest that our clerk should confer with the county clerk Cr. Logan: But whose is the onus In the event of an accident? The foreman (Mr H, Lord) reported that he had taken the advice of the police officer, who said the centre of the bitumen was the correct position for the marks, * Cr. Logan: We did that, and then the other crowd came along, and put the other line in, and made a laughingstock of us. ' v Cr. Bell: If they don’t accept responsibility for the road we will have to ask them to obliterate their marks. It was eventually decided that theborough line be wiped out on the portion of the:north road near the bridge claimed by the Geraldine County Council.
