Allan Bennison, aged 18 years, of 111 firev street, Ashburton, received a fracture of the left leg while engaged in a friendly wrestling bout with another lad on Wednesday evening. The Education Department wrote that extension of free places (senior and Junior) would be granted, in necessitous cases, provided that the parents of pupils proved to the satisfaction of the director that they were unable to provide the necessary fees for the tuition of their children, after the expiring of the free place.. The Minister for Employment (the Hon. H. T. Armstrong) wrote that the Unemployment Board was prepared to consider a subsidy for the erection of an assembly hall for the school, provided the work could be put in hand by March 31. The letter was referred to the executive. The Mid-Canterbury provincial executive of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union wrote offering to co-operate in the movement for obtaining free transport for country children attending secondary schools. It was decided to make further representations to the Minister for Education, pointing out that children who could not get free rail tx-ansport because they were not near the rail, were placed at a disadvantage in receiving secondary education. The principal said that he had applied for free passes for pupils of the Eiffelton, Anama, and Ruapuna Schools who attended for manual training. Swimming Carnival A challenge swimming carnival, Ashburton v. East Ashburton, was held in the Borough Baths last evening. The events were keenly, contested, and several close finishes were seen. MAYFIELD The monthly meeting of the Mayfield Agricultural and Pastoral Association was held, with Mr A. N. Grigg presiding, It was decided to accept an offer from the Ashburton Electric Power Board to supply hot water to the public free, on show day. Messrs E, D. Templer and J. H. Because of the lack of entries received lor the club’s handicap competitions it was decided 1 to postpone them till a more favourable date; Ladies’ Guild Bazaar To raise funds for the bazaar to be held on March 27, the Presbyterian Ladies’ Guild held a bring-and-buy afternoon at the residence of Mrs Nicol on Wednesday afternoon. Items were given by Miss M. .Ashford, who also 1 won a competition. The hostesses for the afternoon were Mesdames Pye and Nicol. It was decided to hold the next meeting-at the residence of Mrs S. Breach.

TE PIRITA The first meeting of the year of the Te Pirita Women’s Institute was held in the local schoolroom, the president, Mrs Tamblin, extending greetings to members. Arrangements were made for the institute picnic to be held on February 22 at Coe’s Ford. WILLOWBY Miss Ngaio Chapman, who has been spending the vacation with her parents, has returned to Christchurch and has begun her studies at the Canterbury University College School of Art. The Rev. Robert McGregor and Mrs McGregor, the parsonage, Willowby, are attending the annual conference of the Methodist Church which is being held in Christchurch. Mr G. H. B. Lill, lay representative for the Willowby circuit, is also attending the Methodist Conference, and left for Christchurch last evening. The Rev. W. J. Oxbrow, of Cambridge, and a former minister of the Willowby circuit, who Is attending the Methodist Conference, will visit the district during the week-end and will preach at both services next Sunday,
