COMPETITION FOR EXPORT LAMB

SOUTH CANTERBURY AWARDS (SPECIAL TO TOT PRESS.) TIMARU, December 13. One hundred and fourteen pens were entered for the export lamb competition for the South Canterbury district, conducted at the New Zealand Refrigerating Company’s works at Smithfield to-day by the Timaru Agricultural and Pastoral Association, compared with 31 in the first year. 84 in the second year, and 120 last year. About 400 farmers and others interested in the export trade attended and practically every district within the competition area was represented. The New Zealand Meat Producers Board gives three prizes—£ls, £lO, and £5, respectively—for the best individual lots of lambs exported from the South Island. A perpetual challenge shield for the best district display is also offered by the board. Southland having won all three in the past. ' . . Mr W. Thomson, of Oamaru, acted as judge on the hoof, and the judges for carcases on the hooks were Messrs M. Hannan, the New Zealand Meat Board’s grader, and D. Irving, grader at the Smithfield works. (Winchester), Southdown three-quarterbred ewes, 3. Longwoolled: Hill Bros. (Pareora West), English Leicester-Romney cross ewes, 1; McCully Estate (Temuka), English Leicester three-quarterbred ewes, 2; E. H. F. Pearce (Gleniti), Border Leicester crossbred ewes, 3. On the Hook—A. S. Elworthy (Holme Station) 1, G. Bolderston (Peel Forest) 2, B. Horgan (Temuka) 3.
