BRITISH SHIPPING I EFFECT OF SUBSIDISED COMPETITORS The following letter from Mr Boyd Cable, the novelist, appeared in "The Times" on August 5, in reply to a letter by,Mr E. H. Watts, in which Mr Watts referred to many countries which "reserve their coasts against us while expecting perfect freedom of the seas among British possessions":— "It is my belief that these foreign countries do not at all 'expect' the freedom- we give them, but that they are in fact amazed (and perhaps amused) that we allow them to place so many restrictions on our shipping without any real protest from us. "Mr Watts again speaks of the countries which 'reserve their coasts against us.' But this is only half the astonishing story. The United States, for example, not only reserves to its own ships as coastal traffic that between their east and west coasts, but goes to the extreme of prohibiting a British liner on her passage between New Zealand and Canada from carrying any passengers or cargo (even British passengers or goods) between the ports of call at Honolulu and San Francisco. Yet we raise no objection to American liners carrying passengers and cargo between the British ports of Australia and New Zealand, Rarotonga, and Tahiti, on their trans-Pacific, passage. In this, as in most other trades, British ships are forced to meet the competition of heavily subsidised foreign lines. "Nobody here blames America or other countries for taking steps to foster and build up their mercantile marine at the expense of ours. They are as perfectly entitled to do so as they must admit we should be to follow their example."
