MR MCCOMBS WILL COME

SOUTH NEXT WEEK

CANDIDATES' PLANS

The two candidates already announced to contest the Lyttelton byelection are expected to start their respective campaigns early in July, probably on July 2. They will have at least three weeks in which to make their appeal to the electors. Mr T. H. McCombs, the Labour party candidate, who recently took up an appointment at the Seddon Memorial College, has been granted several weeks' leave of absence, after consultation with the college board and the Education Department, and will come down to the electorate next week. Mr F. Langstone, M.P., the Labour party's organiser for the by-election, will remain in Christchurch until after the election, and has his arrangements well forward for opening the campaign, in which Labour leaders will all take a prominent part. The Government candidate, Mr M. E. Lyons, said yesterday that he expected to be able to start his campaign in the first few days in July. He did not nropose to invite outside speakers to assist him in his candidature, preferring to put his case personally before the electors. So far no notice of the issue of the writ for the by-election has been received in Christchurch, but it is expected at any time. The issue of the writ is followed by the closing of the roll for the poll, and immediately the date is notified for the closing of nominations and the date of the poll.
