The Hon. J. Bitchener arrived in Christchurch this morning from Wellington, and left later for the south.

Mr J. Roy Smith, secretary to the Canterbury Chamber of Commerce, returned to Christchurch * yesterday from a business visit to Australia.

Mr A. R. Shepard, general manager of the J. C. Williamson Picture Corporation, Ltd., is in Christchurch, and is staying at the United Service Hotel.

Mr J. W. Ewart, a former pupil of the New Plymouth Boys' High School, and a student at Canterbury University College, who has been at Kew Gardens, London, for the last 18 months as a student gardener, has been appointed on the student exchange system to a position in the botanic gardens in Berlin. A motion of sympathy with Mr W. A. Banks in the death of his v/ife was passed at a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday.

The following have been appointed to represent district councils in Canterbury and on the West Coast at the annual conference of the New Zealand Poultry Producers' Federation, which will be held in Wellington next Tuesday and Wednesday: Messrs D. A. McKie (Christchurch), A. Russell (North Canterbury), and J. W. McGlinchy (West Coast). The manager and a member of the New Zealand hockey team which will play India to-day, Messra W. Newsham and D. A. Ewan respectively, are former pupils of the Hamilton Boys' High School. They were entertained at afternoon tea at Ballantynes yesterday by old boy! of the school resident in Christchurch', Major W. E. S. Furby congratulating them and wishing them success in to-day's match. Mr A. H. B. Jones, formerly manager of the Bank of New South Wales in Christchurch, has been appointed manager of the banks branch at Perth, Western Australia. Mr Jones left Christchurch in March, 1934, to take up the position, of assistant inspector for the New Zealand division of the bank, and at the end of last year was promoted to be western inspector for New South Wales, with headquarters at Sydney. Mr Jones's latest appointment means considerable promotion for him, as the bank, after the amalgamation of the Bank of New South Wales and the Bank of Western Australia, has a large business in Perth. He experts to leave Sydney for his new position in August. A motion of sympathy with the relatives of the late Mrs E. R. McCombs, M.P., was passed at a meeting of the Canterbury Education Board yesterday. Mr R. T. J. Ryder, chief copywriter at J. Ilott, Ltd., has been promoted to Auckland. He will taka up his new duties next week.
