EDUCATION BOARD

MONTHLY MEETING REPORTS OF COMMITTEES The Canterbury Education Board held its monthly meeting yesterday. There were present: —Messrs C. S. Thompson (in the chair), W. A. Hanks, R. Wild, J. W. Preen, W. P. Spencer, W. T. Langley. G. Benstead, S. Baird, S. Smith, H. J. Bignell, and G. W. Armitage. The Normal School and Training College Committee reported that it had been resolved, arising out of _ the principal's report, to send a questionnaire to schools on the success or otherwise of the radio broadcasts. It had also been decided to purchase a wireless set for the Normal School, the board to find half the cost provided that the headmaster found the balance by means of entertainments. Gilling (head teacher,'; Rarigilata Island, Miss M. C. M. Grant (sole teacher): Shirley Intermediate, Mr G. D. Ashton (assistant); Southburn, Mr F. J. C. Turner (sole teacher); Te Moona, Mr A. T. The following resignations had been accepted:—Awatuna, Miss A. Greenway (sole teacher); Cattle Creek, Miss D. "M. Johnston (sole teacher); Greymouth, Miss A. Cornwall (assistant); Linwood Avenue, Mr G. D. Ashton (assistant); Rangiora, Mr J, T. O. Stephens (headmaster); Rangiora, Miss M. 11. Harrison (assistant); Rapaki, Miss M. E. Manihera (sole teacher); Rokeby, Mr L. J. Tank (head teacher); Timaru Scuth, Mr A. E. Wishart (assistant); Waimate, Mr P. Sclvrocder (assistant). The report was adopted.

I'.ipKiiui School Bath The buildings committee reported that a Setter had been received from the Christchurch Fire Board stating that the Papanui School bath was in such a position that the fire brigade's heavy motor pump could not operateto pump water from the bath. It was suggested by Ihe (ire board that v. substantially built covering be made over tlie street channelling and that a roadway be formed, in the school grounds at a convenient point. It. had been decided to instruct the foreman to submit an estimate of the cost of carrying out these proposals. The committee had received a memorandum from the Linwood Avenue School Committee, requesting the board's approval of a scheme to erect an assembly hall at the school, the cost to be met by the school committee. It had been resolved to leave the request to Messrs Thompson and Hurley, with power to net. The following plans had been approved:—Shirley Intermediate (levels plan), Christchurch East (block plan), Okuku (school district), Soulhbridge and Lincoln (manual training district), Eificlton (additions), St. Albans (block plan), Kokatahi (proposed remodelling), Akaroa, amended plan (proposed high school), Paparua street site (proposed drainage scheme), Geraldine District High School (proposed melalwork room), Hokitika District High School (proposed now staff lavatories), Christchurch West (new woodwork room), Eyreton West (remodelling of school). The report was adopted. School Journal Covers The board considered a letter from Mr G. C. Beckett, Wellington, seeking permission to supply gratuitously to 10,000 pupils in schools near Christchurch, covers for their school journals similar to those supplied to Auckland and Wellington schools. Permission was granted, subject to the consent of the school committees.
