Mr R Wallis, of Port Levy, has secured from Mr R. O. Johnson. St. Al- . bans, a smart young Irish Terrier bitch. The youngster is from Garryowen Peggy by the Australian im- : ported dog, Cassell Mick, and was bred by Mrs Spence Clark. Mr C. Clarkson. of Tui street, Fendalton. had secured from Mr F.. & Savilie. of Fairlie, the well-known Sealyham breeder, a Sealyham dog puppy, who will be registered as Spiff Tiddly Winks. The puppy * a nice, short-backed, low to ground specimen, sired by the imported Deganwy Rex, from the imported Opini Queen of Sheba, and I believe that Mr Clarkson is highly pleased witn his acquisition. . After a rather prolonged strewn ol bad luck, mainly through losses from distemper, Mr R. Mcintosh, of I endalton, has lately been rewarded for his patience with good fortune. He has just reared, and disposed of two litters of beautiful Irish Setters. Dog puppies from the first litter whelped by his young bitch, Maureen of Shandon, and sired by the well-remem-bered dog, ch Tara of Trashna, have gone to their new homes with Miss M. Pepper, Bryndwr, Mr L. W. Robertson, Chertsey, Mrs Douglas Macfarlane. Rafa Downs, North Canterbury, and Mr G. J. Francis, Queenstown. A particularly fine bitch puppy from this litter is being retained by Mr Mcintosh for breeding and show purposes. ,„„-,, I hear that Margaret McClaren, a young Scottish Terrier bitch, owned by Mr Kidd, Richmond, has been on a stud visit to Mr R. O. Johnson s well-known dog, Scottish Mac. Mr F. G. Savilie informs we, that two of his Sealyham bitches, Opihi Sally and Opihi Maid Marion, have been mated to the same owner's imported winning dog, Deganwy Rex Mr H. Talbot, of High street, Motueka. has. I understand, recently imported a beautiful sable St. Bernard bitch puppy, who is, by the way, a granddaughter of that handsome dog, Balwin the Great, who was brought over from Australia by Mr J. McLeod. of the Park Hotel, Greymouth. Mrs I. M. Wheeley, of St. Albans, has disposed of a young blue roan Cocker dog to Mr H. J. Butler, of Merivale Line. Christchurch. .This puppy is from Derby Nessa, sired by Braeval Brill, and shows promise like his litter brother, Derby Dillon, who did well in the ring until distemper cut short his show career before he was even out of his puppy classes. I hear from Dr. Smith Morton, owner of the Cumbrae Scottish Terrier Kennels. Oamaru, that his imported Cumbrae Heather is shortly due to whelp to his great winner, Rouken Emigrant, also imported Puppies from a previous mating are now matured and are in great form. Dr. Morton also tells me that his Ornsay Posie, imported, is nursing two strong bitch puppies sired by the aforementioned Rouken Emigrant, and that the winning bitch, Cumbrae Ailsa. bred by Dr. Morton, has an exceptionally strong litter of six puppies. All the youngsters are black with good bone, and are the compact, true type like their sire. Rouken Emigrant. A somewhat large litter of Scottish Terrier puppies, eight in all, is reported bv Mrs M. T. Roberts, owner of the Glastonbury Kennels, Leithfield, North Canterbury. These were whelped by a young bitch bred by Mrs Roberts, whose sire was Cumbrae Robin Adair, imported. The puppies are a fine level lot. with strong heads, and claim for their sire Dr. Smith Mortons' imported dog Ornsay Barty. Mrs Roberts adds that she is charmed with her latest addition to her kennels, Cumbrae Sporran, whom she acquired from the Cumbrae Kennels; quite recently. He is an eight months | old son cf Rouken Emigrant and j Ornsay Posie, both imported, and Mrs Roberts describes him as "a grand, | bold little dog, full of life; in fact, i a true Terrier." i The Cairn Terrier bitch, Nyrambla. Jill, the property of Mrs P. Simon, Hoon Hay, has been mated to the same owner's winning dog, Rosemoyne Rambler. In the many reports I have received of v/helpings of pedigree dogs in all parts of Canterbury during the last few months, I can.iot help noticing the big preponderance of males over females. This, of course, happens in certain seasons with other livestock, cattle and poultry, etc., and although all sorts of theories are put forth as to the cause, science has not yet given us proof that any one of these theories is correct. In the time of the ancient Egyptians it is on record that the same thing happened, viz a great preponderance of male children were born after war or famine and the same thing happened, I believe, in the years immediately following the Great War. Why nature has given us so many more mfle puppies than females in Canterbury during the last few months is beyond my power to explain, but it is to be hoped that this is not nature s liberal effort to supply us with an abundance of male dogs to be decimated in the near future by one of those sporadic outbreaks of distemper such as we experience in cycles.

Fidelity I saw a pathetic sight, and one which aroused my curiosity, in the streets of Timaru last week. A dog of no particular breed, but of the Airedale type and obviously of advanced years, I noticed in the afternoon sitting facing the window of a certain public building. The same evening I saw the identical dog sitting for nearly two hours, still rigid and watchful, but oblivious to all around and of passing strangers. My interest further aroused, I examined him closely and found him quite fnend.y but unwilling to budge. Thinking he was lost I made enquiries, and was about to entice him inside for a meal when I was informed by friends that this same dog carried out this daily vicil at the same places and times waiting for his beloved master, Mr Ted le Cren, who ied some months ago. My one consolation was that he was well fed and cared for.
