NORTH CANTERBURY

RANGIORA PERSONAL Miss E. D. Lane, -who has been on the relieving staff of the Rangiora District Primary School for several years, has been appointed assistant teacher at the Ward School, Marlborough. She will leave Rangiora at the end of the month. Mr G W. March, who has been on the staff at the Rangiora Post Office for the last two and a half years, has been appointed postmaster at South Dunedin. Mr March will leave Rangiora within the next few weeks. Before he came to Rangiora Mr March was postmaster at Duvauchelle. Mr A. D. Russell, Amberley, has been appointed to represent the North Canterbury District Council of the New Zealand Poultry Producers' Federation at the annual conference oi the federation to be held in Wellington on June 25 and 2G. Temporary Post Office On June 24 the Post Office authorities will take over the hall of the Northern Agricultural and Pastoral Association, which will be used as the temporary post office for Rangiora during the erection of the new building The Public Works Department will immediately begin the work of erecting the necessary apartments ana counters in the hall, which are required for the carrying out of the Post and Telegraph Department's business. This work will be finished within a couple of weeks and the hall will be used for the business of the Po3t and Telegraph Department for the first time on July 8. Work will then be begun by the Public Works Department on demolishing the present post office, on the site of which the new building is to be placed. First-Aid Examination All of the eight candidates who sat for the recent first-aid examination conducted by the Rangiora division of the St. John Ambulance have passed. Ten candidates had been prepared for the examination by the officers of the division, but at the last moment two were unable to sit. Unemployment Figures Next week there will be 160 men on the Ashley river protection works, 33 on sustenance and 14 on the No. b scheme, in the Rangiora district. Eeturaed Soldiers* Social Five prizes were offered each for the men and women at the social conducted by the Rangiora Returned Soldiers' Association, when there was an attendance of nearly 100. The women's prizes were as follows: Mrs W. Thornton 1 Mrs W. Muir 2, Mrs W, Turner 3 Mrs L, Wallis 4, and Mrs O. Alford 5- and the men's as follows: Messrs C Kirk 1 J. Dreever 2, J. E. Dcggett 3' H. An exceptionally fine double-feature programme will be presented at the Rangiora Town Hall to-day, and again at two sessions on Monday. "Beyond Bengal" is a picture of life and love in the very jaws of death, actually filmed in the most treacherous garden spot in the world, and was produced with the co-operation of His Highness the Sultan of perak. In addition, "Hide Out." a comedy-drama, starring Robert Montgomery and Maureen O'Sullivan. will be screened.

High School Parents' Association A meeting of the Rangiora High School Parents' Association was held at the rxhool cottage. The Rev. R. Tayloi presided. A motion of sympathy was passed with Mr W. A. Banks, a member of the High School board, in the death of his wife. Mr J. E. Strachan (headmaster) said thai the Education Department had shelved in the meantime assisting in the building of the model cottage. A committee was appointed to confer with the women teachers of the school to arrange for the furnishing of the new sick bay and teachers' rest room. Reference was made to the services of Miss M. Moore during her term as a teacher at the school, and it was resolved to send a letter of appreciation to her. /

It was agreed to invite two members of the school council to attend the association meetings. To aid the school equipment fund it was decided to hold a bring-and-buy a + the school on the last day of the term and the stall-holders were appointed for the function.

KAIAPOI On Thusday evening a social was given by the Clarkville-East Eyreton branch of the Women's Division of the New Zealand Farmers' Union by the Kaiapoi branch of the Farmers' Union. The social, which was held in the Clarkville hall, took the form of a card match, and was an outstanding success, A very close match resulted in a win for the Women's Division. Mr W. D. Khouri, of the Canterbury Chess Club, visited the Kaiapoi Chess Club on Thursday evening and gave an exhibition of chess. He played 12 games simultaneously and won 10, drew one, and lost one. Later he played Mr H. F. Barker blindfolded. The game was won by Mr Barker after a very close contest. The games resulted as follows:—Mr W. D. Khouri beat Messrs H. F. Barker. A. Gordon, W. Hart, H. Thornley, E. Miles, P. Nicholson, E. Price, J. Storie, H. Adams, and F. Vincent. Mr Khouri drew with Mr E. Dalton and lost to Mr W. H. Hunter. Mr A. Gordon thanked Mr Khouri for his kindness in visiting Kaiapoi, and expressed the appreciation of members for his interesting exhibition. BELFAST The annual meeting of the parishioners of St. David's Church was held in the Parish Hall on Thursday. The Rev. Canon H. O. Hanby presided and there was a fair attendance. The vicar's report shov/ed that the attendances at communion services had been well maintained, and that the choir was in need of new members. During the year the vicar had given religious instruction in five day schools in the district. He also mentioned the work of the organist, Mr F. Miller, and Mr Brown, and the teaching staff. The balance-sheet, presented by Mr G. Brown, showed a small credit balanse. Mr G. Stening, who was welcomed by Mr Hanby, spoke of the financial sfde of church work, and the value of the envelope system as a means of assistance, The following officers were elected: —Vicar's warden. THE PEAKS The monthly meeting of The Peaks Women's Institute was held in the hall. Mrs Stokes presided, and there was a fair attendance. It was decided to alter the date of the birthday party to August 13. Mrs F. Quigiey read a report of the North Canterbury Federation conference held in Christchurch recently. A competition, "eating jelly with a knitting needle," was much enjoyed, and resulted as follows: Mrs H. Gray 1, Mrs A. Welch 2, and Mrs McKeegan 3. Another competion—"The best flower in my garden" —was won by Miss M. Kennedy, with Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Quigiey equal second. The prizes for the 6d grocery parcel competition were gained by Mrs H. Gray, with Mrs Kennedy and Mrs Hewett equal second, and Mrs Inch third. Mesdames J. and F. Quigiey were hostesses. CUST The Parish Hall was filled when the ladies of theCust branch of St. James' Guild recently held a back to childhood party. Winners of prizes for best costumes were Margaret Overend. Jean Fletcher, Bruce Early, Selwyn Cowens. A competition was won by Miss B. Howatt. Songs were sung by Marjorie O'Malley, Nellie Richardson, Margaret Overend, and Mary Richardson. A pianoforte duet was played by Misses Edith Lock and Eileen Brunsden, and a duet was sung by Misses Marjorie Overend and Margaret Briggs. Recitations were given by Misses Edith Lock and Margaret Briggs, and a skipping dance by Misses Ellen Crysell, Lottie Ryde, and Nellie Richardson. Some very interesting items were given by Miss Simpkins's Sunbeam Party. The accompanists were Misses Edith Lock, Eileen Brunsden, and Miriam Samson. Music for the dancing was played by Misses Eileen Brunsden, Amy Alleyne, Alice Wayland, F. Sanders. and Mr Ron. Whitham. Messrs Ron. Whitham and C. Lindsay, jun., were masters of ceremonies. OXFORD A successful and entertaining "community sing" was held in the Town Hall on Thursday night. The entertainment was under the auspices of the local Plunket Society, and the object was to raise funds to provide equipment for a supplementary milk supply to the children to the Oxford Consolidated School. Mrs W. J. Skurr, president of the branch, briefly explained the position and introduced the song leader, Mr E. D. R. Smith, who for more than two hours kept the audience enthusiastic. He was assisted by the pianists, Misses M. Roi and J. Comyns. The Oxford Band gave several selections, and the mouth-organ performances by Mr D Virtue, the pipe music by Mr J. March, the dancing by Iris Pateman, and a song by Miss Jean Comyns were much enjoyed, as well as the unrehearsed items by parties summoned to the stage. Although the song leader had had a strenuous evening a solo was demanded of him, which he contributed, and which was highly appreciated. Mrs Skurr expressed the thanks of the committee of the Plunket Spciety to Mr Smith and others who had contributed to the success of the meeting. ASHLEY BANK In spite of the bad weather, there was a fair attendance at the fortnighty card evening held in the school. Prizewinners were Mrs A. C. Jones (25 points) and Mr It. Stewart (26 points). Basketball A basketball team from the Fernside School journeyed to Ashley to play the local school team. The visitors were beaten by 14 goals to 0. Afternoon tea was afterwards served. SOUTHBROOk A friendly Rugby match was played jat Southbrook between teams from the Rangiora Convent and the Southbrook School. At the end of two 1 spells there was no score on either j side. After a further spell of 10 I minutes the game ended in a draw. Mr C. Vincent was referee. Hockey Arrangements have been made for Southbrook senior and junior hockey players to have a practice match against Hinemoa at Kaiapoi to-day. As teams will be made up from all availj able players of both clubs, all club I members are invited to take part. ; Southbrook players will cycle to Kaiapoi, leaving Southbrook at 2.15 p.m.

TEMPLETON There was a good attendance at Iho social club dance held in the Oddfellows' Hall recently. The hall was decorated with coloured streamers. Prizes for the competitions were won by Miss Miller, Mr A. Alsop, and Mr Mailelt. The winners of the Monte Carlo were Miss Curtis and Mr D. Annett. The prize for the first couple on the floor was won by Miss Elsie Mel* hopt and Mr W. Butt. An exhibition of tap dancing was given by Miss Jean Marsh. Leahy, auctioneer and stock representative for the Farmers' Co-operative Association, at Leeston, was met by the members of the association's staff and presented with a case of pipes and a tobacco pouch. The branch manager, Mr L. J Walker, in making the presentation, referred to the cordial relations that had existed between Mr Leahy atid the other members of the staff, and wished liim success in his new position at Ashburton. Replying, Mr Leahy said he would always treasure pleasant memories of his long association with the. stiff at Leeston and with the residents of the district.

HOUORATA At the Terrace Station golf links, Hor Grata, the women members met recently to say farewell to a popular members, Mrs E. Jekyll, who was one of the first lady members of the club. The "match during the afternoon took the form of a flag match, the trophies lor which, were a parting gift from Mrs Jekyll. These were won by Mrs T. H. A. Richards in the senior, with Mrs W. O, Gray, runnerup; the junior was won by Miss Edith Thoroe, with Mrs T. Stone runner-up. After afternoon tea, Mrs G. Hall wished Mrs Jekyll every future happiness, and presented her with a hall mirror, as a parting gift from the club. Mr and Mrs Jekyll will leave the district at the end of the month to reside at Little Akaloa.

WADDINGTON The Waddington team defeated the Greendale team by 684 to 533 in the weekly billiards tournament, which was played at the residence of Mr C. G. Jarman. Jenkins 204. Methodist Church The anniversary services of ! the Waddington Methodist Church t were conducted by the Rev. W. L. Long. During the service' a sacred trio was sung by Messrs S. I Because of the weather the usual social was postponed from the Monday evening, and the celebrations were continued on Wednesday. The usual tea was held in the vestry of the church and a musical programme of vocal quartets, vocal trios, instrumental duets and solos, vocal solos and recitations followed. Items were contributed by the Juvenile choir, the Rev. W. L. Long and Mrs Long. Messrs S. Stephens, A. Petrie, and C. D. Sealey. The performers were thanked for their efforts by Mr J. D. Anderson, on behalf of the Church Trust funds, which benefit by the function. Personal Mr W. J. Jenkins, of Fair View, Waddington, is on a short holiday visit to the North Island. Mr and Mrs George Butler, of Sheffield, are visiting relatives in Christchurch. DUNSANDEL The Dunsandel Young People's Club held a social in the Presbyterian schoolroom. There \vas a good attendance. Carter in aid of the funds >of All Saints' Church, Prebbleton, was held in the Prebbleton Hall on Thursday evening, when the following items were presented to an appreciative audience:. Pianoforte selection, Mrs Duckworth; songs, Mr Stanton; tap dance duo, Miss June Shepherd and Mr Douglas Shepherd; sailors' hornpipe, Miss Walton; humorous monologue, Mr Sumner; songs, Miss Harrison; sketch, the village choir; recitation, Mrs H. Rugby Football Mr G. L. Millar- presided at a meeting of the Rugby Football Club committee, when arrangements were made for the club dance to be held on Saturday evening. In view of the-number of players coming forward, it was thought possible that sufficient would be available to enter another team in the sixth grade competition. Members were asked to approach likely players and to report at the next meeting. Band Committee At a meeting of the Prebbleton Brass Band Committee there were present Messrs J. Hill (chairman), J. Cooke, W. Colehso, W. Prouting, G. Millar, C. Cherry, H. Kissel, J.. Yeatman, and H. Prebble. Accounts to the amount of £4 lis 4d were passed for payment. It was resolved that at each quarterly meeting a financial statement should be presented. A resolution that a potato drive should be instituted was carried, the proceeds of the drive to be devoted to the purchase of tunics and caps to complete the bandsmen's uniforms. Lists were issued to members, and the drive will be started immediately. AKAROA The Good Intent Lodge of Oddfellows celebrated their seventy-fifth anniversary on Wednesday night with a ball in the Oddfellows' HalL In spite of the wintry weather there was a fair attendance. The hall had been decorated by women members and their friends. The music was played by Tikao's orchestra and P.G. Bro. G. A. E. Lelievre was master of ceremonies. 'Novelty and competition dances added to the evening's enjoyment. LITTLE AKALOA A pleasant evening given by Mrs C V. Gilbert and Messrs R. and G. Waghorn was held in the Little Akaloa Community Hall in honour of the eighty-first birthday of their mother, Mrs A. Waghorn. A beautiful bouquet was given to the guest of honour from the Luke Waghorn family. The evening was spent in games and dancing.
