-«— MAIN HIGHWAYS OF AWATERE COUNTY ESTIMATES OF EXPENDITURE SUBMITTED (SFBCUX TO THE PIESB.I BLENHEIM, May 4. At the last meeting of the Awatere county, with Mr A. J. H. Gavin presiding, a letter was received from the Marlborough Automobile Association asking that the council lay down a policy of sealing main highways and that a comprehensive programme for this work be arranged over a period of years. Members, however, thought that such a programme was not for the immediate future. The following list was submitted to the Public Works Department as the council's annual main highways estimates:—Maintenance: Clarence-Dash-wood section (including the deviation road), £SOOO (£3 for £1); Awatere. Valley road, £2200 (£3 for £1); Marama road, £4OO (£3 for £1). Construction: Mirza creek bridge, £IOOO (£4 for £1); Marathon bridge, £750 (£2 for £1); Scrub Rough Creek bridge, £670 (£2 for £1); decking Ure river bridge, £4OO (£3 for £1). Public Works: The Grey track, £75 (free grant): Atkinson's road, £l5O (£3 for £1). Six tenders were received for providing a motor grader, but it was eventually decided to postpone this matter until the annual meeting, which will be held later this month to allow the chairman and the inspector to investigate the various types of heavy and medium machines offered. Motor Camp at Rarangi Messrs R. P. Furness, H. J. Stace, and R. Wanden. a sub-committee appointed by the Marlborough Automobile Association, met Mr 1. Hebberd at Rarangi, and entered into an arrangement for the establishment of a motor camp on his property. It has been arranged by the association to erect fireplaces and conveniences and to clean out and protect the well on the camp site. The work will be put in hand immediately.
