TOWNSWOMEN GUILD FORMED FIRST BKANCH IN SOUTH ISLAND (SFICIAL VO TS» PB188.) NELSON, May 4. Following an address by Miss Jerome Spencer, founder of the Townswomen'a Guild in New Zealand, a largely attended meeting of women decided to form a Nelson branch, the first in the South Island. The following commit, tee was elected: Mesdames C. Plum, ridge, W. Gustavel, W. Lock, J. Walker, C. Topliss, G. L. Wearing, A. Parkes, j! Blanche, L. Marsack, G. C. Price, K. Johnston, and O. Dunford. Competitions Society The newly formed Nelson Competitions Society executive has now com* pleted preliminary arrangements for the first festival, to be held in Au. gust. The competitions will last for four to six days, according to the en« tries received. Record Export of Hops The overseas vessel, Port Fairy which sailed last night for New Plymouth, loaded at Nelson 750 bales of hops, a record consignment for this district to any one firm. The shipment is among the first of the season, which has been a particularly good one for production after the poorer recent years in which the demand for hops slumped. The whole consignment to England is for Messrs Arthur Guinness and Company. Personal Mr A. E. Dee has been reappointed Government nominee on the Nelson Fire Board. The Nelson College old girls held a successful field day at the college sports ground, when tennis, cricket, and basketball matches were played against teams of the present girls. The tennis ' matches resulted in an easy win for the old girls, the results being:—Mis« St. John and Mrs Whipwell v. ML Fletcher and E. Bone, 6-2, 6-2- Mis« Prussing and Miss Brown v. D. Brigg3 and H. Davies, 4-6, 6-4. 6-2; Mrs Davis and Miss Liddle v. S. Guthrey and J Heskett, 6-4, 6-0. The cricket match resulted in a win for the present girls • by 47 runs to 28. The basketball match was won by the present girls, and the teams were:—Old girls: M. Foster-Bar-ham, A. Hay, V. Miller, M. Stokes B Stokes, M. Lee. J. Fowler, J. MitchelL M. Baxter; present girls: V. Saunders! D. Stokes, J. Baxter, N. Beattie L. Levien, G. Levien, L. Potton, H, Davis, and N. Parker. « - Eugby . The meeting of Old Boys and Nelson ' in the senior Rugby championship today produced exciting football with heavy scoring, the.former team winning by 22 points to 16. Playing with the wind in the first spell. Nelson scored 13 to 3, increasing /the lead to 16-3, before Old Boy's "began to pile up ' points. P. Vass, Old Boys winger, had a field day, scoring 16 points (a try three penalties, and two conversions) and Busch and Rowe also scored tries' For Nelson. Jamieson. Turley, and Drummond scored tries, and Stewart converted two. Other results were: Rival-10, Rover 8; Pirate 14, Waimea 8. Junior—College 11. Rival 5; Old Boys 12. Nelson 6. Third grade—Nelson 8, Rival 6- Pirate 6, Rover 5; Waimea 3, College A 0; Old Boys beat College B. Fourth grade—Nelson 20. College C 8. Hockey The hockey champion shins were advanced another stage, the results being: Senior—Federal 4, Stoke l:Wakatu 7, United 0. Junior—Waimea 11, United 0. Women's—Rewa A 3. Huia 0; Rewa B 3, McKenzies 0; Kia Ora 9, Wakatu
