MACHINE IN FLAMES AFTER ACCIDENT
l< (rasas temsgham.) a AUCKLAND, May 4. One man was killed and a second rescued from the debris of a blazing motor-cycle and sidecar about 7.30 a.m. to-day after the vehicle had collided head-on with a heavy milk g lorry on the Great South road at Otahuhu. ■■ ■ Ronald Edmund Smith, aged 26, a 1; fitter, of Papatoetoe, who had been i: married only a week, was killed, and t Terrance McSweeney, aged 22, lab- t ourer, of Papatoetoe, suffered concus- t sion and a fractured leg. He underwent an operation later and his condition is fairly serious. Smith was the driver of the motorI cycle. At a curve on the road the motor-cycle combinatipn wobbled, then swerved across the road and crashed into the lorry. Instantly it burst into flames. f Smith was crushed between the , motor-cycle and the radiator of the i lorry and killed instantly. McSweeney t was knocked unconscious by the im- , pact and collapsed into the burning j ruins of the motor-cycle. The lorry-driver, R. B. Billings, had' realised that the motor-cycle was out of control and had slowed down practically to a stop. He jumped from the driver's seat and dragged Smith out. It was apparent that he was dead and his clothes were burning. 3 Billings then dashed into the flames t again and rescued McSweeney, who c then slowly recovered consciousness. r Billings said it appeared to him ( that the driver of the motor-cycle c could not keep the sidecar on the j road, and in an effort to recover got s into a bad wobble. The machine £ swerved to its own side of the road and then shot across al an angle and hit the lorry with great force.
