ASHLEY RIVER TRUST

The commissioners of the Ashley River Trust met on Friday evening, with the chairman, .Mr F Langbein* oresiding. The balance-sheet for the year ended March 31 showed a credit balance of £466 13s 4d. Receipts were £764 19s lid. The rents outstanding amounted to £l9O 18s 3d, and rates outstanding to £64 2s In the profit and loss account, grates totalled £640 4s tOd Mr R. Mclntyre, the engineer in charge ol the Ashley river works, wrote stating that he had inspected the willows on the north bank of the Ashley river, near Waikuku. and contended rhat they would ultimately -benefit the river control scheme. Mr A. Boyce wrote stating that the creek which the had asked him to clean was an ov< w from Stoney creek, and cleaning u ould cut the water off from farms further down. It was decided to adhere to the previous instruction that the watercourse should be clearly defined. The Lands and Survey Department wrote regarding the flooding and overflowing of Stoney creek on to its reserve at Sefton. It was stated that the culverts across the road were too small to carry the flood waters, and that the matter was one for the Rangiora County Council. The matter was left in the hands of the chairman. The advisory committee on tree planting in North Canterbury advised that it had decided to hold a conference of the State Forest Service and the authorities controlling the Ashley riverbed to discuss tree planting in the riverbed above and below the Ashley traffic bridge. The trust expressed its willingness to co-operate with the committee. It was decided to write to the Public Works Department stating the dangerous stretch of river on the north side of the Ashley between the concrete traffic bridge and the railway bridge near the Ashley township, and asking whether it was intended to erect groynes along this stretch. It was agreed to pay back to th« Public Works Department the balance of a loan amounting, to £125.
