NOTES ON THE RACING (SI'ECIAL TO HIE CHESS.) HAWERA, May 4. Unexpected Win Lady Spy. a newcomer lo ilie ranks ol hurdlers, was always going well, handy lo the leaders, and going up lo Esteem, who had led over the last seven furlongs, she had his measure at the last fence. Esteem made a bad jump here and nearly fell, but iie would not have held off his challenger, who won full of running. Invietus, who was not prominent early, was a poor third, elear of (he bunch, which was headed by Ruaform, Colossal, and Constant Sun. Tareha lost his rider at the second last fence, up to which starve he had been rjoing well. He was over a considerable amount of extra ground in the running Constant Sun was finishing on, but he was always a lone, way back, and was interfered with by (he mishap to Tareha. Lucidus jumped very poorlv. The winner showed herself a fine natural jumper. Convincing Victory Royal Secret, top-weight for the hack sprint, lay in behind the leaders, Orae and Sweet Music, to the straight, and then cut them down, to win going away. Sweet Music and Ornc had a keen struggle for second, the former just prevailing. Chikarn, Gold Mission, and Friesland were nearest of the others. Royal Secret won well, and nothing had a chance with her over the concluding stages. Windscreen got enught in the barrier and lost ground, as also did Gold Mission. .

Will Improve Transact, despite several lives, scored a comfortable and convincing win in the Egmonl Steeplechase. He covered more ground than anything else in the race, and despite punching several of the obstacles, and losing ground, he was soon into his stride again, and running handy. The second of the stand double the first time nearly had him down, but he survived this and lesser blunders. Altogether it was a most promising effort, and his jumping is bound to improve. Pahu, who got second, did so by stamina only. He was in the rear throughout and plugged on ovei the beaten lot. Capella Abbey was prominent throughout the running', but tired badly at the end. as also did Copey, who made most of the running. The favourite, Chile, dropped his rider when he hit heavily at the post and rails near the four furlongs post, before the completion of the iirr' circuit. He had lumped rather wildly uc to that stage, although he had always been second or third in the running. Taura Lad performed the same feat as Chile, the second time round, when running fairly well. The winner paid a good price, and backers showed poor judgment in letting him go out the outsider of the Held. An Easy Task Boughal hit the front early in the Flying Handicap and was never caught. British Columbia, Refresher, The Tiger, and Orapai were his nearest attendants, Cawbeen, who had been very slow to get going, moved up on the rails, and while she headed oil the others, she had no prospect of reaching the winner. The bunch, with the exception of Orapai, who finished last, were all fairly handy, both Carfex and King Meslor having made up a considerable amount of ground. All the Way Debut reached the front early in the Hack Scurry, and won all the way. Full Throttle was in behind him throughout and had his rider been abb to keep him straight he may have caught the winner. Reipar finished on well for third, after being well back in the bunch early, and the best of the others were Lion Heart, Gold Gleam, and Windsoreen, but Full Throttle was the only one with any chance against the winner. The field gave some trouble at the post, and Te Hai was stood behind. losing all chance. He was the straight-out fav- j ourite. Topthorn showed pace to the turn, but did not run on. Finished Strongly Lady Ronald, winner of the McR : Handicap, lay last in the running, but her final challenge overwhelmed her

opponents. Sirona and Tahuranga took turns at pace-making from Ruri, on the rails, Trishna, Davistock, and LadyRonald. Ruri got stopped in his endeavour to get up on the inner of Sirona in the straight, and Trishna headed the leaders out. He had no chance with Lady Ronald's final run. Davistock was a very close third, with Sirona and Ruri next. It was a decisive win for Lady Ronald. Ruri was probably a bit unlucky, but he had a chance to get through before he finally got shut out. Exciting Finish The last race produced a thrilling finish, when State Bank, Onewhetu, and Aussie Ra closed on the leader, Kurapae, in the straight. Kurapae ran very wide and lost his chance, finishing fourth, but the other three had a great battle in which the riding of W. Broughton was largely responsible for the win of State Bank. Amyril was chopped back early, and was never dangerous. State Bank gave * W. Broughton his third win for the day. PROSPECTS FOR TO-DAY (SPXCXAX TO TSB PKSSB.) HAWERA, May 5.
