WESTLAND R.C.

WING WINS HANDICAP isruciAL vo ru* rasas.) HOKITIKA, May 4. The Westland Racing Club's autumn meeting was opened on the Hokitika racecourse to-day in threatening conditions. Some very heavy showers fell- during the afternoon, fortunately between races. The course was not affected to a great extent, and form a.splayed at the earlier meetings on the Coast was well maintained. The attendance was considered good and speculation was satisfactory in the circumstances, the sum of £3431 10s for seven races being handled under the single pool system, as against £2705 10s for eight races at the oneday meeting last year. NOTES ON THE RACING A IJleiiheiin Success Arrowin. favourite for the Trial Stakes, .shot away from the barrier rise and soon had the field stretched out. She had a big lead entering the straight from Sundancer, Zionist, and Coaloif, but was in trouble alter passing the distance and Zionist shot past her to go on tor a convincing win, Sundancer finishing on better than the favourite to beat her home for second money. Coalpit was next, in front o£ Impossible and Copenna. The winner is the first of the Blenheim team of J. O. E. Jones 10 win on the circuit. He was placed a few times last season and i' likely to improve wi'h age. Sundancer went a fair race without having any chance with the winner. Arrowin. like her sister, Arrowmaid. has a turn of speed, but only for about five furlongs. Coalpit 'did not shape too well on the righthanded going, and Cape Gabo and Nardoo were never in the picture. Easy for Favourite General Sarsiield was selected as a short-priced favourite for the Express Handicap Trot, with Stella Derby next on the list, and they paid the dividends. General Sarsfield quickly assumed command and led throughout. He was followed into the straight by Stella Derby, Atarau King, and Beverley King, and they finished in that order, the favourite having a pointless win, while Stella Derby easily accounted for Atarau King. _ Beverley King was a length away in front of Broughshane, Lough Erne, and Alice de Oro. Free Kose Again , Capital was made a slightly better favourite than Free Rose for the President's Handicap, and the pair fought out the finish. Capital and Delice were the most prominent from the start and they raced abreast to the straight entrance from Free Rose, Arrowmid, and Heather Glow. Delice did not last long in the run home, and Free Rose tackled Capital. In a sustained finish Free Rose gradually got the fayourite's measure and beat him comfortably by half a length. Arrowmid was a fair third in front of Battle Hero and Heather Glow. Solitaire 11. and Nautipol were left at the post, taking no serious part in the race.

Free Rose won well and was patiently handled to wear down Capital, who had a big task with his weight on a soft track. Arrowmid showed improvement, but Delice stopped badly and was evidently short of galloping. A Creditable Effort Bella Rosa had to put up a meritorious performance to win the Stafford Hack Handicap. She followed Rothen and Quebec into the straight, and when headed for home made an attempt to get up on the inside of Quebec but was disappointed and she had to be pulled to the outside. Her chance of, downing Quebec then did not appear to be very bright, but she settled down to her difficult task and got up in the last, few strides to gain a neck verdict. Latitude, who suffered badly by cutting across the field, when the barrier lifted, finished resolutely from the back to get third money a similar distance away. Rothen was next, in front of Pawky and Gold Arrow. Bella Rosa's win created a big impression, and quick thinking on the part of her rider contributed towards the result. She has undoubtedly improved, and her form in higher class company will be awaited with interest. Quebec ran another useful race and has proved very consistent on the trip. Latitude would have caused much more trouble if he had been better handled. Sisterina lost any chance she possessed by running out wide at the first two bends, losing several lengths. Never in Doubt Wino was supported down to a short price for the Autumn Handicap, and he justified his position by having an all-the-way win. lie was followed practically throughout by Royal Gallant, Korero, and Giggleswick. and they finished in that order. Royal Gallant challenged Wino in the run home, but the latter was never under pressure. Korero finished strongly into third place a length in front of Gigglewick. Wino actually outclassed the field. He is a long-striding galloper, and going the reverse way made no difference. Royal Gallant ran up to his recent good form and seems to be partial to any kind of going. Korero may have have been unlucky over the concluding stages and will do better over a longer journey on Monday. Monipere had every chance on tins occasion but is evidently not right, while Giggleswick is far below his form of earlier in the season. Favourite Breaks Up General Sarsfield, penalised 36 yards, was again sent out favourite for the Dominion Handicap Trot, but failed to move oIT correctly and lost sufficient ground to put him out of serious consideration. Alice de Oro and Belle Derby disputed the lead over the last mile, and in a close finish Belle Derby stayed on the better to win by half a lengtn. Broughshane was a good third, just in front of Atarau King. Arena Beats Favourite Imperial Spear was a hundred-ticket bctt r favourite than Arena for the High-Weight Handicap, but had to submit to a decisive defeat by the former North Islander. There was some trouble going out of the straight, Imperial Spear getting the worst of it and when the back stretch was entered Arena had a clear lead from Animated, Imperial Spear, and Courtyard. This was the order to the straight entrance, where Imperial Spear moved up and inside the distance challenged Arena, who, however, finished full of running and had an easy win. The favourite as easily beat Coomassie and Revision. Courtyard and Animated were next.

The winner wan acquirer! from tin; North Island a .short while ago by Mr J. Adamson, and is a stable ma to of Free Rn::e, both being trained by V. Lee. Imperial Spear had a rough passage going out of the: f;trair;i\t. Ho was forced right up against the fence for several strides and an accident seemed imminent, but he clear with the loss of some valuable ground. He finished well and would have worried the winner with equal treatment. Coomassie is still going strong but must by now be considered well on the down grade. Courtyard threatened danger passing the distance, but once more did not carry on despite vigorous riding. I'KOSPIiCIS FOR TO-DAY iru'scr.u. to rut wiK:s,,.) GKEYMO'JTH. May 5. Heavy rain fell on the West Coast throughout last night, but Ihe weather was fine to-day and there was every prospect to-night of favourable conditions lor to-morrow's races at Hokitika. A general holiday in the district is being observed, and a large crowd is anticipated. The following horses will probably be well supported:— Jubilee Stakes—Sundancer, Arrowin. Windsor Trot—Treasure Bond. General Sarstield. Royal Handicap—lmperial Spear, Royal Gallant. Anniversary Handicap -- Capital, Royal Sceptre. Celebration Hack Handicap—Bella Rosa. Quebec. Balmoral Trot—Beverley King, Luces*. Farewell Ha 11 dic n p --Win o. Arena. The acceptances are:--p.m.— jb"iii.Li',ij .sparks, nf GO ?ovs. six fu rlniiL'h.
