CRUELTY TO CAPTURED SEA-GULLS MAGISTRATE'S COMMENT (VtlSt AISSOCIAYIOS Ztl.t,(Jl\KU.) AUCKLAND, May :> Prosecuted on two charges by Mr Hollingsworth, inspector for the Society for the Prevention of Cruelly to Animals, a Chinese, named Leslie Sue Nack, pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court. He was charged on April i) with taking two absolutely protected birds, two red-billed gulls (Turapunga), and also with cruelly illtreating the birds by plucking their (ails and wing feathers, and tying the gulls by the legs to a stake. Mr Hollingsworth said that when ho took possession of the two gulls tl_2y were dead. The defendant admitted having tied them to a stake. In plucking the birds, portion of their flesh and been torn away. Mr G. Wallace, on behalf of Sue Nack, said the seagulls had been doing extensive damage to his market gardens, and they were also a source of trouble to other gardeners. The magistrate said the defendant was liable to a fine of £25 on one of the charges. "I i'md it hard to have any sympathy for you at all," fie said, in "fining the defendant £2 on each charge, plus costs, £1 7s.
