JUBILEE CELEBRATIONS AT REDCLIFFS DISCUSSION AT MEETING IN SUMNER It has been decided to hold a water pageant and carnival at Monck's Bay, Redcliffs. on Monday, May 6, as part of the celebrations of the jubilee of the King. This decision was reached at a public meeting in Sumner on Saturday. Mr W. H. Nicholson presided over h good attendance of representatives of all the local sports bodies and organisations. The chairman said that as a result of a letter from the Prime Minister the Rt. Hon. G. W. Forbes, methods of celebrating his Majesty's jubilee had been discussed, but it was thought preferable not to reach a definite conclusion without consulting the local bodies In the borough. The proposed water pageant was only a suggestion, and if anyone had anything else to suggest the meeting would be prepared to discuss it. He then asked the town clerk (Mr J. F. Menzies) to read the Prime Minister's letter outlining the proposals for the anniversary celebrations throughout the Dominion. Mr Nicholson said that from this letter it would be seen that the Government would validate any expense incurred. The first thing to decide was whether or not some form of celebration should be held.
The idea of holding some celebration was unanimously supported by the meeting.
Mr R. A. Beveridge, president of the Christchurch Sailing and Power-Boat Club, said that his club would do everything in its power to co-operate. "You have only to say what you want us to do and the members will do all they can," said Mr Beveridge. Mr H. E. Kennett moved that the celebrations on May 6 take the form of a water pageant and carnival, and the motion was carried unanimously. Some of the ideas advanced were the holding of a children's sports meeting, illuminated boats, a searchlight display, culminating in a submarine explosion, a fireworks display, a band concert, the firing of tar barrels on Shag Rock, and finally a dance to complete the day. It was decided to form a committee of those present, with power for a
representative of those associations not represented at the meeting to be added. It was also decided to call a committee meeting next Wednesday evening.
