SPRINGS The'members present at the monthly meeting of the Springs County Council were Councillors J. S. Simpson (chairman), J. H. '.Villiams, P. V. Bailey, J. W. Kime, C. H. Watson, and J. Woods.

The clerk reported the credit balance to be £lOl9 8s Cd, from which would have to be deducted £250 for the 12$ per cent, rebate on rates. During the year £SOO had been paid out of revenue toward the council's share of the cost of paving the Main South road. The balances were: Springston riding, credit £624 9s 6d; Greenpark riding, credit £4lO lis 9d. The 1933-34 balance-sheet was received from the Audit Office, certified as correct.

A letter was received from a firm of solicitors about a drain thiough the property of Day's estate, requesting the council to have a new culvert constructed. Advice was received that the Highways Board had given authority for the* sealing of the council's section of the Christchurch-Akaroa main highway. The council is to call tenders for the work. It was decided to take no action about the Prime Minister's letter concerning celebrations to mark the jubilee of the King. Tenders for drain cleaning were accepted as follows: Powell's drain, 92 chains, Kimber Bros.; Day's road, 155 chains, V. Harris; Goodrich's, 30 chains, Kimber and Pitcairn; Quaylc's, 50 chains, J. Godfrey, jun.; Lake road, Parrett's road, 65 chains, C. Tully; Main Springston road, Ellesmere, 39 chains, F. E. Kane; Springston, 95 chains, Milne and Son; Marshall's, 71 chains, A. W. Wilson; Fincham's, 44 chains, V. Harris and others; Swamp road, 55 chains, A. W. Wilson; Chamberlain's, 56 chains, Kane and Son; Carter's, 83 chains, V. Harris and others; Andrew's, 80 chains, V. Harris and others; Murray's, 40 chains, W. Bennett. The overseer's report was considered and adopted. AMURI At the monthly meeting of the Amuri County Council there were present: Crs M. Bethell (chairman), H. R. Davison, J. ,T. Duncan, R. Mercer, K. Pettigrew, G. O. Rutherford, W. Hanmer Atkinson, R. L. Jameson, and J. J. Gallagher. After further considering the matter, it was decided that the section offered by the Lands Department for a common grazing ground near Dog Creek, Hanmer Springs, was not suitable fur the purpose, as the cost of fencing and keeping the section clear would be too expensive. The chairman reported that the Public Works Department had agreed to .e Hossack road being constructed along the river-bed. It was resolved that the Hossack road work be left to the Hanmer riding councillors.

The chairman's action in authorising a man to control traffic on the day of the Culverden ewe fair was approved.

The Automobile Association, Canterbury, wrote about the council's application for one-way bridge signs, stating that the necessity of the work did not warrant the expense. Mr J. P. Rivers wrote accepting the council':; ofl'rr to supply him with water from the school race at £2 a year.

The Conservator of Forests wrote asking foi the council's consent to the legalisation of the stock route through Reserve 420'.), Jollie's Pass, Hanmer Springs. The chairman noved, and Cr. t). O. Forbes, wrote forwarding particulars of the proposed celebrations of the silver jubilee of the King, and asked local authorities to take steps to arrange for proper recognition of the event in the county. The Rotherham School Committee wrote drawing the council's attention to the condition of the wooden culvert outside the entrance to the school grounds. It was resolved that the following tenders be accepted for the 1935 fuel supply:—Petrol, Mocketts Motors, Ltd.; kerosene, Atlantic Union Oil Company; oil. Vacuum Oil Company, Ltd. It was resolved that accounts amounting to £GGI 3s 3d be passed for payment, and that Cr. W. Hanmer Atkinson be authorised to sign cheques with the treasurer.
