THE MAYORALTY OF BLENHEIM ADDITIONAL CANDIDATE NOMINATED (EI'ICUL TO THE t'KISS.) BLENHEIM, April 14. Mr John Stevenson was nominated for the Mayoralty yesterday, and with his entry there are three nominees in all. Messrs C. T. Smith and B. J. Cooke had already signified their intention to stand. New Building Proposed Wright, Stephenson and Company, Ltd., have decided immediately to begin the building of new and modern offices in Halifax street, on land recently purchased alongside the company's store. The building will be a single storey, and of concrete, with 40 feet frontage, allowing more office room than at present. At the will be an area specially planned for uie convenience of clients as a parking ground for cars, and at the front will me a large petrol and oil station. Qaeen Carnival There was a large attendance at a meeting last evening to form an organisation in support of the business, professional, and tradesmen's candidate in the queen carnival which i» being held to provide new instruments for the Regimental Band. The meeting unanimously elected Miss Eileen Sutherland as its candidate for the carnival, and it was decided that an effort be made to induce the licensed victuallers, wholesalers, motor traders, and taxi proprietors to sponsor a third candidate. Mr C. T. Smith was elected a permanent chairman and a full committee of women and men's sub-com-mittees were formed. Plans were made for money-raising efforts. Poppy Day Appeal The Poppy Day appeal this year showed a slight increase on last £B6 5s being collected, as against £BS Is 6d last year. The appeal was organised by members of the Victoria League, who provided sellers to canvass the whole town. BleiJiheLm-Remvicktowii Road Figures supplied to the county council by the county engineer showed the cost a mile of preparing a section of road between Blenheim and Henwicktown for tar-sealing as £BSO a mile, as it would be necessary to •n----crease the present depth of metal by three inches over the full stretch. TM cost of tar-sealing would be £B3O a mile, which would cost the council about £1686, compared with £6OOO to £BOOO for concrete. The present cost of upkeep of £ll7 a mile annually for this section would be reduced to between £SO and £6O a mile vr the road was sealed.
