QUEEN CARNIVAL
KAIAPOI CONTEST ENDED
The queen carnival contest, organised by the Kaiapoi Beautifying Association to raise funds to carry on the association's activities, was concluded in Kaiapoi Park on Saturday afternoon. The two queen candidates selected were:—Miss Betty Dixon, for the summer season, and Miss Heather Fisher, representing the winter season. Ihe candidates committees had been working energetically for some weeks arranging various appeals for funds, and on Saturday a carnival was held in the park as a final effort. Ideal weather made the day pleasant, and there was a large attendance. The proceedings began with a procession, which proved a great attraction. Headed by the Kaiapoi Band, it included the Kaiapoi Boy Scouts, Kaiapoi Fire Brigade. Decorated lorries depicting the winter and summer seasons, and carrying the two queens with their retinues were a special feature, and lorries containing "Grand-dad Rudd" and Iris family, a "dark-town band," and a tableau of the Kaiapoi Bachelor Club, caused much amusement. At the grounds stalls, side-shows, competitions, and efforts of skill did brisk business during the afternoon. Tnose in charge were:—Afternoon tea, Mesdames W. H. A. Vickcry, C. H. Ching, W. G. Wylie, R. W. Wvlie, P. Wells. A. Millar, E. Gray, J. Anderson, M. Greenwood, A. Hirst, J. Phipps. B. Pearce, G. Hirst, Misses S. E. Evans, and N. Stark; ice cream, Kaiapoi Basketball Club (Mrs Brookes Misses J. Simpson, and D. Tnnes); novelty stall, Kaiapoi Women's Institute (Mesdames G. Green, J. Johnston, H. J. Miller, E. Hunter, and R. J. Smith); • sweets stall, Kaiapoi Tennis Club (Mesdames J. McDougal!, L. B. Evans, J. S. Baker, Misses C. McDougal!. P. Pearce, and Macilree); coconut shy, Kaiapoi Amateur Athletic Club; side shows, Kaiapoi Pines Beach Association; bowling, Kaiapoi Working Men's Bowling Club.
At 3 p.m. the final payments were made in the queen carnival contest and the Mayor, the Rev. W. H. A. Vickery announced that the winter queen had won. Cheers were given for both candidates. The amounts raised were as follows:- -Winter queen (Miss IT. Fisher), £95 8s Id; summer queen (Miss B. Dixon), £75 12s Id.
The tic!, sum of £3O was realised as a result of the carnival. A well attended dance, held in the Orange Hail in the evening, netted a further £l2 for the association funds.
