1934-35 SEASON CLOSED FINALS IN INTER-CLUB TOURNAMENT The 1934-35 lawn tennis season was brought to a close on Saturday when the undecided championships in the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association's inter-club competitions were completed. The remaining matches were the final of the mixed doubles and the semi-final and final of the men's doubles.

On the hard courts a team from the A grade club players gave some practice to the Canterbury University College team which will compete at Dunedin at Easter in the annual inter-uni-versity tournament. Miss T. Poole and J. Mercer had a convincing win in the mixed doubles against Miss P. Wright and F. W. Jull, the former pair taking every advantage of the slowness of the grass court Miss Poole hit with her customary vigour. her partner showing good court craft.

After defeating A. Goddard and J. Small in the semi-final, Jull and A. L. Kay won the final of the men's doubles against N. Brydges-Jones and W. R. Bullard in two close sets. The winners, with Kay outstanding, showed more steadiness than their opponents, who were unable in both sets to hold their strong lead. The winners saved six get points in the second set. Jull, 6-3, C " 2 ' JANET STORRY SHIELD MATCH WON BY RANGI-RURU The annual match for the Janet Storry Shield, between the old pupils of Rangi-ruru, St. Margaret's College, Christ's College, and St. Andrew's College, played on the hard courts at Wilding Park on Saturday, was won by Rangi-ruru without the loss, of a set. Four players represented each college, the winner of the shield being decided by the sets won, whether in singles or doubles, by the' four players. The following were the results, the names of the St. Andrew's and St. Margaret's teams given first:— Men's Singles—R. Reid beat L. B. Black 9-1, G. Nutt lost to B. G. Donovan 7-9. L. J. Broughton beat H. A. Bishop 9-7. N. Hamilton beat L. C. Averill 9-6.

Women's Singles—Mrs D. Macdonald lost to Miss N. Bishop 5-9, Miss M. Pyne lost to Miss E. Fleetwood 7-9, Miss T. Thomas lost to Miss P. Wright 1-9, Miss M. Inwood lost to Miss C. Reese 1-9. Men's Doubles—Reid and Nutt lost to Black and Donovan 8-9, Broughton and Hamilton beat Bishop and Averill 9-7. Women's Doubles—Mrs Macdonald and Miss P.yne lost to Misses Bishop and Fleetwood 6-9, Misses Thomas and Inwood lost to Misses Wright and Reese 0-9.

Mixed Doubles—Reid and Mrs Macdonald lost to Black and Miss Bish6p 4-9, Nutt and Miss Thomas lost to Donovan and Mi.ss Fleetwood 5-9, Broughton and Miss Inwood lost to Bishop and Miss Knight 5-9, Hamilton and Miss P.yne lost to Averill and Miss Reese 5-9. UNITED CLUB CHAMPIONSHIPS DECIDED The final oi the United Club's women's doubles championship was won on Saturday by Misses T. and I. Poole, who defeated Miss M. Sherris and Miss M. Wake, 6-3, 8-6. • The quality of the tennis was variable, not one of the four players being able to produce consistently good overhead work.
