An enquiry was held after the Ballance Handicap into the improvement shown by the winner, Modern Lady, and also into the running of Waikato Prince. The placings were not altered, the stewards accepting the explanation tendered by ■ Mackle, the driver of Modern Lady, but the/ disqualified £. K. Smith, owner ol Waikato Prince, for six months on the ground that the horse was not driven to win. Smith is giving notice of appeal. Results: BOKOUGH HANDICAP, Of 65 so Yd. 3min 49sec class. notes on the racing (IHCZAX. TO TUB P8*83.) WANGANUI, April 13. An Easy Win Going to the front at the end of Sialf a mile Wrackless was never troubled to win the Borough Handicap, Worthy Princess and Native Princess were the early leaders from Native Bird and Native Tree, but Mrhen Wrackless went to the front the others could make no impression. The favourite, Audo Patch, was very slow to get going and with half a mile to go was so far away as to look a hopeless proposition, but he put in solid work at the finish to get second. Native Tree did best oi the others to finish third, followed by Captain Bolt, Worthy Princess, and Worthy Member. The Improvers The Improvers' Handicap resolved Itself into a three-horse race over the last five furlongs, at which point King's Play took charge from Cassidy arid Pukcuri, who were the early leaders. Pukeuri went with King's Play across the top where Cassidy, who had dropped back at the halfipile, commenced another forward move. He ran up to Pukeuri at the turn and together they challenged King's Play. The latter went on to win very easily, showing a lot ot improvement on his first day's ollort. Cassidy beat Pukeuri for seeci money and Juggler just shaded Plutus and Supertax. A Spectacular Kace The Suburban Handicap was n spectacular race until a furlong troni home, where Harvestin, who was a good second fancy to Insolvent, broice badly, leaving Bolinda King to win easily. Vesta Ray led from Gold Seam with Insolvent, Bolinda King and Harvestin together close up. There was no change for a mile and then Bolinda King made a sharp run on the outside to reach the front at the top with Harvestin following closely. Insolvent made a ni° va 'J®"* was checked and forced round the field, harvestin overtook Bolinda Kins at the distance but broke up? and although made an effort he could get the leader. Vesta Ray was thud with Harvestin next.

There was a large attendance, and Ihe track was in good order. The totalisator handled £4296, against £3416 lasl year. The winner of the Buller Trot, Cantata, owned by Dr. Simpson, a former part-owner of Rey Spec, returned a dividend of about a century and two-thirds. Gay Sister Wins Bonnie Direct was made a good favourite for the Liverpool Handicap. After a slow beginning she was well placed at the end of a mile arid a half, but failed to go on. The tmish i provided a great race between Gay S;ste. and Sylvia Sydney, the former banging on to get a narrow decision Nelson Chum made play for a few furlongs when Blondie, wno was slow to strike a gait, ran to the front from Nelson Chum and Bonnie Direct, and in this order they ran to the mile and a half. Guymond here made a forward move and took charge three furlongs from home. He soon had a good break from Gay Sister and Sylvia Sydney, but he tired in the last furlong and both passed him. Sydney Sydney made a solid cll'ort but failed by a neck to get Gay Sister. Guymond was a moderate third, followed by Nelson Chum and Bonnie Direct. One of Bonnie Direct's tyres blew out and caught around the wheel. Great Vanity I''a<les Great Vanity went at a great rate in the Stewards' Handicap, and had a lead of half a dozen lengths at the quarter mile, but again faded out of a place. Mamaku, Pauline Dillon, Ideal, and Juggler were the nearest to the leader along the back, but crossing the top Azel Maid ran up to the bunch. Hard driven, Pauline Dillon went to the front at the turn from Azel Maid, with Great Vanity, Juggler, and Ideal handy. Azel Maid challenged, but broke up badly, and. Pauline Dillon, vigorously driven by C. Fairrnan, won decisively. In a hard tussle, Dushkn just nosed Ideal out of second place. Great Vanity, Supertax, Juggler, and Azel Maid were next. Modern Lady Scores Modern Lady won the Ballance Trot Handicap easily, while the Auckland horses, Audo Patch and Waikato Prince ran indifferently. Bell Heather took charge at the start from Survivor, Header, and Black Native, with Modern Lady going fast. At the end of a mile, Modern Lady ran to the lead and had charge along the back from Bell Heather, Header, Arapai, and Earl Bingen. Bell Heather dropped back, and Header went after the leader, but had no chance with Modern Lady. Arapai finished well in. third place, followed by his stablemate, Earl Bingen, Mabel Chimes, and Blue Blood. The Favourite Beaten Red Gold, a warm fancy for the Louis Cohen Memorial Handicap, refused to go av/ay until all chance of success was lost. Great Vanity led out from Allworthy, Iron Man. and Orleigh Mills, but before going three furlongs, Transworthy dashed up to the front, with a sharp burst, and soon had a lead of four lengths over All Worthy, Great Vanity, and Orleigh Mills. Nothing had a chance with the leader in the run home, but Orleigh Mills finished on to beat Allworthy for second money. The Farewell Storm Queen, a little better fancy for the Farewell Handicap than Sylvia Sydney and Edna Worthy, won nicely after being in front practically all the way. She led out, and along the back < was showing the way to Lord Wrack, Nelson Chum, and Sylvia Sydney. Crossing the top, Storm Queen, Lord Wrack, and Nelson Chum were in line, hut round the turn the favourite gained an advantage, and came away to win by two lengths from the consistent Guymond, with Sylvia Sydney third, Nelson Chum, and Gay Sister, who was rehandicapped to 38 yards. Edna Worthy began splendidly, but went so fast in the first furlong that she left her feet and lost too much ground to havo a chaace afterwards.

NOTES ON THE RACING (SrEriAL TO THE TRESS.I WESTPORT, April 13. The Westport Jockey Club's meeting was favoured with beautiful sunny weather. There was a large attendance, and the betting was spirited. The totalisator handled £4293 10s. as against £3416, an increase of £BBO 10s. The racing produced some excellent finishes and fast times. The Dominion's leading horsemen, W. J. Broughton and L. J. Ellis, were present, but Ellis was the only one of the pair to ride a winner. Ellis also rode a second, and Broughton rode two thirds, Broughton thus now having an advantage of six over Ellis in the premiership. A Surprise Win The aged Limoru'— geldign, Zctes, one of New Zealand's highest priced yearlings, followed up his surprise success at the last Reefton meeting by taking the honours narrowly from the maiden performer, Free Rose; in the Trial Handicap. In a straggling starl, Backlead was hopelessly left. Zctea showed the way out from Free Rose. Bella Rosa, nnd Master Reynard. Zetes and Free Rose drew out in the straight, and in a punishing finish Zetes hung on gamely to win by a head, with the fast-finishing Bella Rosa three lengths back, just ahead of Master Reynard. Then came Quebec, Zionist, and Coalpit. A Huje Dividend A collision after a furlong had been covered in the Buller Trot Handicap upset the two favoured candidates, Broughshn.ne and Brian Boru, and the result of it was the return of one of the biggest dividends paid out by the club. The winner, Cantata, a three-year-old filly by Rey de Oro—Drumly, is owned by Dr. J. Simpson, of Ngakawau. and trained by 11. Roberts. Westport. She was having her second start. Sadie Axworthy. W:>r Lass, nnd Cantata were tne leading trio, well clear 01. Salute, Neriiiic Wrack, and Winkeyo. After ha if a mile was covered Cantata ran to the front, and was not troubled to win easily by three lengths from Salute, with Nonnie Wrack two lengths further back. Then came Wink Eyee, War Lass. Solario. High Noon, and Travis Thorn. Heather Glow's Good Win Only four horses paraded in the Morley Handicap. Quietly essayed to flow up the field, but Heather Glow quickly ran to the front after three furlongs, setting a hot pace. Although Quietly caught Heather Glow inside the distance, the latter was well ridden by L. J. Ellis, and held on to win by the narrowest of margins. Monipere was caught at the tapes, losing several lengths, but soon ran in behind the field, but its best was a moderate third, two lengths away, just ahead of Korero. Although the outsider of the field of four, the winner was well fancied in a fairly even betting pool An Outstanding Win Eon Tray proved his outstanding fbility by winning the Electric Handicap. Following Copenna out, Bon Tray took command after three furlongs, and was not troubled to win by a length and a half from Bella Rosa, who was three lengths ahead of Imasurvev, who finished with plenty of dash. Copenna was fourth, and then came Margaret Rose and Theatin, the staunch favourite, last. Bon Tray is trained in Westport by T. Smith, and is owned by E. and M. McPaddcn. He is a four-year-old gelding by Tea Tray—Endorse. A Comfortable Victory Brian Boru was the pilot to the home bend in the Granitv Trot Handicap, where Broughshane, Awa Dillon, Eastern Queen, and Lazy Pete drew out from a bunched field. Broughshane did best in the run home, winning comfortably by three lengths from the consistent Awa Dillon, with Lazy Pete a length and a half back. Eastern Queen was fourth, and then came Brian Boru. The winner is owned and trained in Westport by Jack Spiliane, and is by Rey de Oro Began Spec. He was bred by F. G. Holmes, and is a full-brother fo Rey Spec, and should shortly compete in the same company. High Noon, the favourite, and the only Canterbury reprosentative. gave a poor display in both starts.

I All Easy Win Grecian Prince gave A. E. Ellis at: armchair ride in the Scanlon Handicap, alicl won with the greatest ease. Grecian Prince, who paid fine of his best dividends since his recent line ot successes, followed Arena out, but after two furlongs the favourite took charge, and was allowed to bowl along in front. Rose Val, who was early at the tail of the field, came with a fast burst over the last quarter, but Grecian Prince won easily by a length from Rose Val. with Animated a length and a half further back. Lady Rene was fourth, and Colossian came next. Another Easy Win Sisterina, the only Omoto-traincd winner, got oil the winning list in the Awaiti Handicap, when she scored a hollow victory by two lengths from Master Reynard, who, after a poor showing in the Trial Handicap, finished on gamely over a longer distance to beat Monipere for second place on 'he post by a head. Monipere had a bad passage, having to be pullet! out from the rails and taken round outside of the Held. Sisterina lay handily behind the leader, Wino, until six furlongs were covered, and then she drew out to win with ease: Wino, the firm favourite, had every chance, but was found wanting over the last furlong, and finished fourth. Then came Quebec and Pawky. The winner is a four-year-old mare by Arrowsmith—Matty Carlina, and is owned by J. Leonard, and trained by M. Conza. Zetes was one of the early leaders, but bore but badly going out of the straight. Grecian Prince Scores Again Penalised eight -pounds, Grecian Prince carried his impost of 10-7 to victory with greater case than in his first success. Arrowmid disputed the lead for three furlongsc with Miladi and Haulbowline. The last-named dropped out of the contest, and the tOp weight took charge, to come on to win by a clear length from Arrowmid, with Miladi six lengths back, and Haulbowline fourth.
