NEW BRIGHTON PUBLIC LIBRARY

ANNUM, MEETING OF COMMITTEE The annual meeting of the New Brighton Public Library Committee was held in the new reading room last evening. Dr. W. T. Glasgow (chairman of the committee) presided. The annual report and balance-sheet, which were adopted, stated that subscriptions amounted to £l2l 2s 4d, an increase of £ll 5s 4d over the last year. Subscribers numbered 180, an increase of 38, and new books added during the year totalled 338, which was an increase of 117 over the number added in the previous year. Improved business had resulted from the sending of circulars to residents in the borough. Resignations were accepted with regret lrom Mesdames E. Hockley, M. Cochrane, J. Bellamy, Miss E. Hulme, and Mr A. E. Pollard, and the vacancies were filled by Miss G. Arnott and Messrs W. F. Leitz. C. J. Christian, and G. Gudge.

The balance of assets over liabilities is £416 3s sd, and the liabilities are nil. After allowing depreciation the value of the books is £375 Jss lid.

Favourable comment was passed on the alteration in the reading room and library, and a vote oi thanks was passed to Cr. R. E. Holloway for his efforts in securing the assistance of the New Brighton Borough Council in carrying out the necessary works. It was decided to send a letter of thanks to the borough council for carrying out the improvements to the library and also for recommending that (he sum of £6O be set aside for the committee during the next two years. A letter of thanks is to be sent to Mr T. A. Joynt for his services as auditor.

The election of officers resulted:— Chairman, Dr. W. T. Glasgow; secretary and treasurer, Mr L. K. Scott; committee, Mesdarnes F. J. Bromley, G. Bodger, Miss G. Arnott, Messrs F. J. Bromley, J. D. Brown, R. E. Holloway, L. K. Scott, W. F. Leitz, R. J. Christian and G. Gudge. It was decided that, as in the interests of subscribers, books should circulate freely; in future fines would be strictly enforced when books were not returned on due date.
