WESTPORT HARBOUR
TELEGRAM TO MINISTER FOR MARINE (sraciAL to tm PBisa.) GREYMOUTH, February 5. Following a resolution passed by the Westport Borough Council, the Mayor of Westport (Mr J. Kilkenny) has sent a telegram to the Minister for Marine (the Hon. J. G. Cobbe), who will visit Westport shortly to inspect the Westport harbour. The telegram states:— "Will appreciate your visit, but with reports and data at Wellington a visit to obtain local knowledge of the harbour is futile. The council and myself are of the opinion that you are side-tracking Westport, and it is a reflection on our intelligence to promise .... a visit when boats are held up caus- %, ing loss of revenue and unemploy- ) ment. Nero fiddled while Rome was burning. Same position here. Please endeavour to commission another dredge—authorise work to deepen harbour." The Mayor also telegraphed Mr P. C. Webb, M.P., as follows:—"Council and myself congratulate you on persuading the Minister to visit Westport, but the opinion here is that avisit is not enough. Immediate action is imperative by commissioning another dredge or other work needed immediately to improve harbour."
