The members present at the monthly meeting of the Ellesmere County Council, held at Leeston on Monday, were: Crs. John Heslop (chairman), A. QUigley, R. T. McMillan, and John Nixon. Correspondence was received from the Public Works Department about a traffic census and the annual review of highways. A letter about outstanding rates was received from the council's solicitors and it was decided to instruct them to collect the amounts overdue. Mrs M. A. Kaili's application for an extension of time in which to complete the cleaning of water races was granted, and Messrs W. T. Street (on | behalf of Mr J. Penny) and R. J. Riches wrote stating that they were endeavouring to comply with the council's, request to clean the races as soon as possible. Mr Riches suggested December as a more suitable month for cleaning than October. The pay-sheet totalled £741 12s sd, and the credit balance, after the accounts were met, was stated to be £763 10s Bd. A report from the stock ranger stated that except in one locality, the roads had been fairly free from stray stock during the month. The water race caretaker reported that there had been a good supply of water in the races served from the council's and the Selwyn County head works during the month. There had been a. good deal of interference with races, however, and in some places the water was being diverted to flood gullies, with a resultant shortage on other properties.' Sand at the Rakaia head works had been removed, and a boulder groyne put ifi. In some cases notices to Clean races had not been complied with, but other property owners had not yet done their cleaning: The engineer also referred to the inconvenience caused by the blocking of races and was instructed to give no*
