SAFETY IN THE SAAR
♦ Opponents of Nazis Protected GERMAN PROMISES (UXITBD PRESS 4SSOCUTIOM—BT BLECTKIO TELBGUA PH—COPTRIGHT.) (Received January 20, 5.5 p.m.) GENEVA, January 18. Mr R. A. Eden (Lord Privy Seal), in a broadcast speech, announced that important undertakings had been given to safeguard supporters of the status quo. Germany had agreed that all voters and also nonvoters who have lived in the Saar for three years might, for a transitional period of one year, bring before a plebiscite tribunal jomplaints of any prosecutions, reprisals, or discrimination due to their political attitude towards the plebiscite. It had also been agreed that inhabitants of the Saar should not for the same period be subjected to racial or language discrimination. Mr Eden paid a tribute to the exceptional services of Baron Aloisi (chairman of the Committee of Three which made arrangements for the plebiscite), Mr G. G. Knox (chairman of the Governing Commission), and their colleagues. INTERNATIONAL FORCE TO LEAVE SOON GENEVA, January 16. The Council of the League of Nations has decided on the evacuation of the international force in the Saar, which will begin on February 1, the Italians going first.
