CHAMPIONSHIP EVENTS AT TIMARU JUNIOR AND INTERMEDIATE TITLES (SPECIAL TO THE FBBSS.) TIMARU, January 20. Amongst the best of the junior and intermediate swimmers of the Dominion were present at the Century Bath, Timaru, on Saturday afternoon, when the National Championship meeting was commenced. No fewer than seven provinces were represented. Four championship events were decided, the" 100 yards boys' intermediate freestyle, 100 yards boys' junior freestyle, 50 yards girls' junior breaststroke and the 220 yards girls' intermediate freestyle. The outstanding performer was the Otago champion, S. W. Jarvis, who fulfilled the hopes held of him by winning the 100 yards intermediate championship without being really extended. Second place went to the other Otago boy, J. Barry. It was expected that strong opposition would be offered to Jarvis by the Aucklander* A. Pascoe, but the Otago swimmer was definitely too fast.

A surprise was effected in the 220 yards girls' intermediate freestyle championship by the Southland girl, Miss D. Symon, who beat the Auckland representative, Miss E. Rainey, from whom great things were expected, by more than seyen yards. It was not till more than three-quarters of the distance had been covered that the Southland girl took charge.

In the 100 yards boys' junior freestyle champion C. W. McGregor (Otago) found his hardest opponent in T. Bath (Southland), who. looking at the halfway mark as though he might win, could not withstand McGregor's gruelling pace in the dash for the line.

The 50 yards girls' junior breaststroke championship was won after an exciting race by Grace Priestley (Auckland), from C. Knowles (Otago). The northerner showed greater staying power, taking the lead at an early stage in the race, and keeping it throughout.

Of the four championships two were won by Otago, and one each by Auckland and Southland. Jarvis's time for the intermediate championship—s9 seconds—was the best of the day. It equalled the standard and was 3-ssec outside the national record held by Noel Crump. Miss Priestley's time for the 50 yards breaststroke championship was well within the standard and was two seconds outside the national record of Miss D. Breward. McGregor's time in the 100 yards boys' junior freestyle championship was two seconds inside the time registered by the previous title-holder, H. Pateman. There was a large attendance and the weather was ideal. Results were as follows: — CHAMPIONSHIPS 100 YARDS BOYS' INTERMEDIATE FREESTYLE First Heat —S. W. Jarvis (Otago) 1, A. Pascoe (Auckland) 2, R. Rimmer (Otago) 3. Jarvis was slightly in the lead at the turn, soon improved his position, and won casing up. Time, 60 4-sse*. Second Heat—.T. Barry (Otago) 1, D. O'Neill (Wellington) 2, It. Hatchwell (Canterbury) 3. Barry showed the way to the othors over the last 50 yrirds. 11. Goldsmith (Auckland) had previously lod. Barry won by a yard. Time, 64 S-sscc. Final —Jarvis (Otago) 1, Barry (Otago) 2, Rimmer (Otago) 3. Jarvis was at the top ot his form in the final. At the turn he was slightly ahead of Pascoe, Barry being close behind. It was over the laßt 50 yards, however, that Jarvis showed his quality. Swimming with powerful Rtrokos he drew away from the others, who had to bo content with fighting out the- less important positions. Pascoe s lead from Barry was gradually reduced until when about 25 yards from home the Aucklandcr was in tliird place. He was not allowed to remain there, for Rimmer came up quickly and boat him by a touch. Time, 59sec. 100 Yards Boys' Junior Freestyle Cham-pionship—-C. W. McGregor (Otago) 1, T. Bath (Southland) 2, J. Mulholland (South Canterbury) 8. The race, which was swum without heats, attracted six entries. Bath first obtained a slight lead, and managed to hold it till reaching the turn, where McGregor began to assert himself. Passing the Southlander, he made the pace too hard for Bath to catch him and won with two yards to spare. A hard struggle for third place resulted in Mulholland touching ahead of the others. Time, 69 2-ssec. 220-Yards Girls' Intermediate Freestyle Championship—D. Symon (Southland) 1, R. Low (Canterbury) 2, B. Rainey (Auckland) 8. Miss Rainey was regarded as the probable winner of this race, but to the surprise of her supporters she did not even fill second place. Starting well, Miss* Rainey was first to touch the bath at the 50 yards turn, Miss Symon being close on her heels. When three-quarters of the distance had been covered, Miss Rainey was making hard work of the race, while Miss Symon appeared to have it well in hand. Miss Symon increased her lead and won easily by seven yards, while Miss Low, who had come up rapidly in the closing stages of the race, just managed to beat Miss Rainey for second place by a touch. Time, 3njin 3 1-5 sec.

50 Yards Girls' Junior Breaststroke Championship—G. Priestley (Auckland) 1, C. Knowles (Otago) 2, N. Manning (South Canterbury) 3. The Auckland and Otago representatives were on level terms to halfway, from which point Miss Priestley took charge and stalling off the southerner's efforts to displace her, won by about a foot, Miss Manning being beaten for second place by a touch. Time, 43 l-ssec. HANDICAP EVENTS 25 Yards Junior Boys—Final: A. Hooke (3sec> 1, J. Drummond (2sec) 2, E. Dennison (lsec) 3. Time, 15 2-ssec. 25 Yards Junior Girls—Final: O. Wilson (3sec) 1, J.
