HEAVY RAIN IN SAMOA
* TWENTY INCHES IN A DAY CARGO OF BANANAS POSSIBLY SPOILED (Special to United Press Association —By Radio.) (Received January 20, 7.20 p.m.) APIA, January 19. ' There has been abnormal rainfall during the last two days. Approximately 20 inches fell in 24 hours, and the rain, which was accompanied by ! hurricane squalls, caused, considerable damage to roads and bridges between Apia and Talefa. The steamer Waikawa arrived on Wednesday to load 4000 cases of bananas for Auckland, but because of the rain and the heavy sea running in the harbour, the steamer was unable to load. She went outside on Thursday morning and returned to port on Friday evening, when the weather moderated.
The bananas were packed ready for shipment on Tuesday and it is thought that the consignment will be »a total loss because of the fruit ripening and becoming unfit to ship. However, 3930 cases of bananas were loaded and the vessel sailed this morning. The weather is now normal.
