DISTRIBUTION OF PRIZES

—♦ — TAI TAPU Mr T. O. Morgan (chairman o£ the school committee, extended a hearty welcome to the parents and friends of the children who attended the Tai Tapu School at the annual break-up ceremony. The gathering took plaeo in the school grounds. A display of the work done during the year by the pupils was examined with much interest. The chairman complimented the staff upon the year's work and he exhorted the parents to send their pupils regularly to school. The committee appreciated the work of instructing the children in Bible knowledge done by the Kevs. M. Ayrton, G. Macrae, and T." M. C'urnow, all of whom were present. Mr Morgan referred to the Hon. .Sir li. Heaton Khodes, who, he said, never failed in attending to present the prizes. Ho had given up his visit to Wellington to welcome the Duke of Gloucester in order to present the prizes, and the large audience showed their keen appreciation of his kindness. .Sir It. Heaton Khodes, in addressing the gathering, it was always a happy occasion for" him, and he was always interested in matters affecting; the Tai Tapvi School, ile congratulated Mr -\. Thompson (headmaster) and his stuff on their good work, also the He v. M. Ayrton and the other ministers on their faithfulness and good work. Ho said that Sir James Carroll—a very eloquent speaker, got his good language from the Bible—a book of the most perfect Eng. lish that anyone could read. In wishing the children a very happy time in their school holidays, Sir Heaton said their parents had had very difficult times which children knew nothing about. Mr Thompson, headmaster, Mr Lorrimer, assistant, Miss Steinmetz, infant mistress, and Miss J. McLachlan were recipients of presents from the children. Mr Thompson responded on behalf of the teachers, thanking them for their good wishes. Mary Studholmo (president), of the junior branch of the Red Cross Society, gave a brief account of the work done during the year. Many garments by girls and toys mado by boys were sent to the lied Cross centre in Cliristclmrcli. Sir Heaton presented the prizes to the children and Miss Hynes presented the prizes she had given to the winners in the junior Red Cross section. At the conclusion the children were each presented with a bag of cherries and sweets, which is an annual gift by Sir Heaton to the children. A very pleasing programme of part-songs, a, recitation, and a pianoforte solo was contributed by tho pupils of the school. LAURISTON Tho minimi hreak-up ami prize-giving ceremony of the Lauriston School was held in tho Memorial Hall before a good attendance of parents and friends of the school. A group of songs was given by the children of the lower division. Mr f. A. Fyfo (chairman of tho school committee) gave a brief review of the committee's activities during tho year, and congratulated the staff and the pupils on the excellent year's work. Songs wcro then given by the senior pupils. The headmaster. Mr J. A. Mackie, gave, an interesting report of the school year, indicating that in the schoolroom, and also on the fieJd of sport, tho school had been well represented. The principal address was given by the Rev. D. B. Ashfnrd (Rakaia), who gave a bright description of school ceremonies in other lands. Mrs I). B.
