ASHBURTON GARDEN PARTY The Methodist Parsonage Guild held a garden party in the grouhds of the Tuarangi Home yesterday, when members were the guests of the matron (Mrs F. H. Knight). Members of the Baring square New Church Ladies' Guild were also present, and an enjoyable day was spent in the beautiful gardens of the heme. Tennis and croquet were played during the afternoon. Anniversary Concert There was a large attendance at the Citadel on Tuesday evening at a concert which concluded the Ashburton Salvation Army young people's anniversary. Adjutant V. J. and Mrs Dick, of Timaru, presided. An excellent programme of musical and elocutionary items was presented by the Sunday school children, the singing being under the direction of Bandsman J. Ford. Several kinds of drill were demonstrated in one display, and riialugues and illustrated action songs were also included in the programme. Girls' Auxiliary Social The annual social and gift evening of the St. Andrew's Presbyterian Girls' Auxiliary was held on Tuesday, and, as a result, the various stalls will benefit considerably. The evening was spent in games and competitions. On behalf of the auxiliary, Mrs R. S. Watson presented Miss Jean Copland with the aggregate prize for competitions held during the year. Speed Typewriting On Monday evening a special speed typewriting test of 10 minutes was held at the Ashburton Technical High School. Miss Mabel Weston (the holder of the school record)" raised her speed to 64 words a minute (net time). The test, which was on unseen matter containing many technical terms, is considered difficult. Other speeds recorded were: Miss Kathleen! Stoddart 60 words, Miss Ina Stringer 58. Miss Agnes Clark 50, Miss Nancv McDonnell 49, Misses Ellen Pattle, A. Cricket and Shooting Old boys of the Ashburton High School will play their annual cricket match against a team from the school this afternoon, and the annual rifle shooting match will be held on Saturday evening. Repertory Society's Performance The final production of the Ashburton ; Repertory Society was held at His Majesty's Theatre last evening, when three one-act plays full of interesting dialogue were given. There was a large attendance of members of the society and others interested. "Ebb-Tide," by Robert Lambert, is a powerful drama with manv tense moments, and the cast gave a fine performance of a difficult play. Mr J Halkett Millar's portrayals of Sir John Hardcastle, K.C., in "Ebb-Tide," and as Denis Glifton in "Wurzel Flummery," were greatly appreciated by the audience. The whole cast gave a fine interpretation of A. A. Milne's comedy, "Wurzel Flummery." Martin Shepherd's comedy of action, "Ali, the Cobbler," was the third play presented. The eastern settings and costumes, together with the excellent acting, brought spontaneous applause, and the play was an excellent ending to a successful evening's production. The supervisors of the productions were Misses Renee Chamberlain and Winnie Andrew and Messrs L. A Charles and A. Prentice. The cast in each play was as fol-lows:—"Ebb-Tide": Misses Joy Williamson, Ivy Jaine, and Clarissa Tyndall, Messrs Pat Bonifant, Geoffrey Nicoll, Charles Johnston, Godfrey d'Auvergne, and Halket Millar. "Wurzel Flummery": Misses Ayleen Robilliard and Phyllis Cox, Messrs Alex. Prentice, Leonard Charles, Halket Millar, and Pat Bonifant. "Ali, the Cobbler": Miss Renee Chamberlain, Messrs Sidney Gower, Wilfred Ryburn, and Ernest Easterbrook. Items were given by an orchestra under Dr. N. E. H. Fulton. ! MOUNT SOMERS On Saturday evening a dance war: held in the Memorial Hall, in aid of the swimming club funds, which was largely attended. Music was played by Cook's Band (Lyndhurst), and Mr J. A. Mears was master of ceremonies. During the evening the trophies were presented. The medal presented by Mr G. Foreman for the most improved boy swimmer was won by Jim Harris, and that presented by Mr W. R. Glasson for the most improved girl swimmer was won by Bertha Green. There was a large attendance at the final of a series of card and social evenings, held in aid of the library funds. Prizes were awarded to Mrs W. Robinson and Mr T. Kerr, and consolation prizes awarded Mrs W. R. Glasson and Mr J. A. Mears. The aggregate prizes given by Messrs L. F. Wood and G. Foreman were won by Miss T. Morgan and Mr J. W. Beatty.
