Ryan was elected representative of the .North Canterbury district on the New Zealand Methodist Conference at the annual district Synod yesterday. At a meeting of the Automobile Association of Canterbury (Incorporated) last evening motions of sympathy were passed with the families of Dr. F. G. Gibson and Mr A. H. Eastwood, who died recently, and who had both been members of the association. Appreciation of the work of the Rey. A. Hopper (Papanui), especially for the Methodist South Island Orphanage, was expressed yesterday by the Synod of the North Canterbury district of the Methodist Church. Thanks were expressed to Mr George Bowron for his services as treasurer of the Orphanage Board. Reference to the death of Mr A, E. SummerfJeld was made at the annual meeting of the Canterbury Surf Life-Saving Association last night. The president (Mr D. V. Wilson) said that Mr Summerfield was secretary of the association some years ago, and had been a keen member of the New Brighton Surf Club. The sport had suffered a great loss by Mr Summerfield's death. Members present stood in silence for a moment. Dr. J. B. Condliffe, a member of the economic intelligence service of the League of Nations, accompanied by Mrs Condliffe, arrived in Christchurch yesterday morning on an extended holiday visit. Dr. Condliffe was formerly professor of economics at Canterbury University College and was later on the secretariat of the Institute of Pacific Relations. He has many friends in Christchurch and he will spend at least two months in the city before he leaves again for Geneva.

A motion of sympathy with the relatives of Mr J. T. Sinclair was passed at last night's meeting of the Canterbury Council of the New Zealand Institute of Horticulture, The chairman (Mr J. A. McPherson) said though Mr Sinclair had not been a member of the institute, he had been one of the lecturers in horticulture at the Christchurch Technical College. A motion of sympathy was also passed with Mr W. E. Edginton in his illness.
