DANCE RECITAL

MISS ENID LAWSON Dancing demands not only perfect flexibility of the limbs but also proper facial expression. ■ However, good the dancer's action, if the face wears a frown or even a look of severe concentration, the dance is spoiled. The pupils of Miss Enid Lawson, who gave a dance recital last night in the Radiant Hall, while showing a remarkable sense of rhythm, did not all achieve perfect control of facial expression. Miss Lawson presented a full and varied programme, which opened with a dainty piece, "Sunshine and Shower" in which the intermediates and babies took part, Miss Foreen Hancock..taking the solo part. Followed a quaint Dutch tap-dance by Miss Edna Berg and Miss Betty Freeman. They were quite at ease on the stage. The seniors in an operatic dance gave a finished performance. Dressed in white frocks and red caps and jackets, the intermediates, deserved the applause they won for a spirited hunting ballet, while Miss Betty Freeman, who had previously appeared in a duo, showed that as a solo dancer she possessed a confidence that was refreshing. The outstanding dancer of the evening was Miss Edna Berg, whose cymbal dance left one with the impression that no pupil could have oeen better chosen for a dance. Later as a water-lily sprite, she gave an equally clever interpretation. A bright number was "Under My Umbrella," which consisted of a solo sung by Mr Douglas Suckling and a ballet dressed in green with, umbrellas. Miss Betty Wilson in her Valse Lente presented with delicate sense the subtle qualities of operatic dancing, a slow measure demanding both restraint of movement and a dignified

interpretation. The finale, "The Old Spinning Wheel," brought an enjoyable recital to a close.
