GREYMOUTH PERSONAL (SPECUIi 10 THE TEESS.) GREYMOUTH, November 15. Mr A. Walton returned to-day from a visit to Australia. Mr J. Shrives left yesterday for Otahuh'u. Mrs R. Ramage returned yesterday from Christchurch. Hospital Board At the monthly meeting of the Grey River Hospital Board, Mr R. McTaggart presided. The Hospital Boards' Association advised that a patient was not entitled to possession of an X-ray film, the matter being left to the discretion of the board. The chairman said the film was available to outside medical men, but must be returned. Discussion ensued about the forwarding of a remit to the annual conference if the association suggesting that the hospital levy at present collected by a levy on local body ratepayers, be in future collected as a levy on all adults in an individual manner, similar to the unemployment tax. The medical superintendent reported that patients in hospital at the end of October totalled 79, whilst there were 40 inmates of the Old People's Home. A hospital qommittee recommendation that five probationers be approved for promotion to replace those whose contracts terminated after the State examinations, the names to be selected in order of seniority of application, was adopted. Harbour Board At the monthly meeting of the Greymouth Harbour Board, Mr P. J. McLean presided. The Regatta Club was granted permission to build a boathouse near the Lagoon. The surf club was granted £5 towards the erection of a pavilion on the beach. A grant of £5 was made to the McLean Park Committee towards the purchase of a motor-lorry. The engineer reported that the extension of the south breakwater was nearing completion. Obituary The death took place yesterday of Mrs Johanna Sweetman, an old resident of the district, aged 74. A native of County Kerry, Ireland, Mrs Sweetman came to New Zealand 50 years ago. She is survived by a grown-up family. Presentations Mr A. McMaster, who left to-day on transfer to Addington, was met last evening by the choir and congregation of St. John's Presbyterian Church. Mr McMaster has been conductor of the choir *f or the last 12 yeai's.

The Rev. H. R. Fell presided and presented Mr McMaster with a hearth rug from the choir, and with a cheque from the office-bearers. Miss McMaster, who has been a member of the choir for a number of years, was presented with a handbag. Mr McMaster, who has been conductor of the Civic Band since its founding, was last evening tendered a farewell banquet at Perotti Hall by fellow bandsmen and friends, and presented with a gold pocket watch. Mrs McMaster was presented with a crystal vase, and Mr Ron McMaster. jun„ with a wristlet wa,tch. Miss Kathleen Gieseking, pianist to the band, was presented with a pair of gloves, in view of her approaching departure. . . . Philharmonic Society At the fifth annual meeting of the Greymouth Philharmonic Society, Mr R. R. Smith presided. The resignations of Mrs C. McQueen and Mr A. Aims, two of the oldest members of the society, were received with regret. The election of officers resulted:— Patron, Mr W. Meldrum; president, Miss O. Broad; secretary and treasurer, Miss L. Brown; auditor, Mr A. Naylor; committee, Mr R. R.. Smith (chairman), Mesdames W. Coltman, and Fuller, Miss Nita Hopkins, and Messrs J. Noonan and Holmes; pianist, Mrs R. Henry; conductor, Mr W. Coltman; deputy conductor, Mr F. Smith.

Another successful evening meeting was conducted by the Greymouth United Cycling Club at Victoria Park last evening. Results:— Quarter-Mile Cycle—D. Johnston (40yds) 1, J. Daniels (10yds) 2, P. Caledonian Society At the annual meeting of the Runanga Caledonian Society, the election of officers resulted:—President, Mr E. Graham; vice-president, Mr W. Page; secretary Mr R. Aims; master of ceremonies Mr W. Richmond; auditors' Messrs W. Caldwell and W. Richmond; ladies' committee, Mesdames J. Isherwood, W. Page, J. Bell, E. Graham, F. White, and L. Maskell.

HOKITIKA WESTLAND COUNTY COUNCIL 1 (»PJCCIAr. TO THI PRESS.) HOKITIKA, November 15. At the Westland County Council's meeting Air Travel (N.Z.), Ltd., and West Coast Airways, Ltd., were granted permission to erect hangars on the Hokitika aerodrome. TJhe question of increasing workmen's wages by 5 per cent, was deferred until January. A motion that the road staff be reorganised and permanent men be employed, as suggested by the county engineer, was also deferred until January. Personal Mr R. McKee, who has been on the staff of the Hokitika Post Office telephone exchange for four years, has been transferred to Westport. Hospital Board At a meeting of the Westland Hospital Board it was reported that Matron Anderson had resumed duties, Sister Stone had commenced duty on the staff, and Nurse Ward had been appointed as a probationer nurse. The acceptance of a tender for the construction of an X-ray room was confirmed, and the treasurer was instructed to arrange for the purchase of an ambulance.

REEFTON PERSONAL (SPECIAL TO TttZ PRESS.) REEFTON, November 15. Mr T.- L. Floyd has returned from a visit to Christchurch. Mr and Mrs A. T. Brooks have returned from a visit to Christchurch. Musical and Literary Society The annual meeting of the Reefton Musical and Literary Society was held in the Council Chambers, the Rev. Father Seymour, S.M., presiding over a good attendance. The balance-sheet showed that the society was in a good financial position. The election of officers resulted as follows:—President, the Rev. Father Seymour; vice-president, Mr W. F. Brett; secretary and treasurer, Mr W. B. Auld; committee, Mesdames Archer, Sharpe, and Mr R. Don. Mrs Kane was elected conductress of the Glee Circle, and Mr R. Don official accompanist. The Rev. P. Dorrian was ■ elected leader of the literary section. Temperance Union The annual election of officers for the Reefton Women's Christian Temperance Union, resulted as follows: President, Mrs Waddell; vice-presi-dents, Mrs Thompson and Miss Watson; cradle-roll superintendent, Miss Watson; secretary, Mrs Gilmour; treasurer, Mrs Switzer. During the meeting Miss Watson read an interesting report on the women of America and their renewed efforts for the prohibition cause. The hostesses were Mesdames Switzer and Davies.
