The Mayor of Christchurch, Mr D. G. Sullivan, M.P., who has been attending the Melbourne Centenary celebrations, arrived in Christchurch from Wellington by the Wahine yesterday morning.

Mr H. G. Smith, of Wellington, who has been on a visit to his wife and son in England, returned to Wellington on Wednesday by the Ruahine. His son, Dr. D. C. Smith is at New College, Oxford. '

Mr E. A. Jones, who for two years has been manager for Canterbury for the Vacuum Oil Company, Pty„ Ltd., has received notice of transfer on promotion to Melbourne to be attached to the head office of the company. He will leave to take up his new position early in January. The Rev. A. J. Wethered, of Winchester, England, arrived at Wellington from England by the Ruahine on Wednesday. Mr Wethered was last in New Zealand 45 years ago. He is on holiday, and will spend several months in this country before returning to England. A letter from the head office of the Navy League, London, expressing sympathy with the relatives of the late Mr J. J. Dougall, was received last night by the general committee of the Canterbury branch, of which he had been president.

The Rev. Canon F. Newton, of Harrogate, England, arrived at LytteJton yesterday by the Ruahine. Canon Newton was vicar of Ross,, Westland, more than 30 years ajcii' and was a keen mountaineer. Ma did much climbing and alpine photography in company with Dr. Teichelmann. Canon Newton will be the guest of the Rev. H. G. Hawkins, of Glenmark, during his stay in Canterbury. Dr. W. Traill Thomson arrived at Wellington from England by the lonic yesterday. Dr. Thomson left the Waitaki Boys' High School in 1898 and entered the University of Otago, subsequently qualifying at King's College Hospital, London. During the war he was a captain in the Royal Army Medical Corps. He then practised at Leamington until about four years ago, when he sold his practice and went to live in Warwickshire. Dr. Thomson left New Zealand in 1899, and has not been back since then. Last year he was presented with the Venerable Order of the Hospital of St. John of Jerusalem by the King.—Press Association.
