FRUIT GROWING

MEETING OF CANTERBURY ASSOCIATION A meeting of the Canterbury Fruit Growers' Association was held last night at Papanui, the president, Mr F. W. Sisson, being in the chair. It was decided to hold a picnic in the near future, the chairman being empowered to confer with the Stone Fruit and Tomato Growers' Association and arrange a place and date. An instructive address dealing with the ravages and treatment of various blights was given by the assistant Government inspector, Mr J. Carolin. Many growers, through the wet weather, had missed their first spray and consequently black spot was evident in many orchards, he said. Brown rot had increased considerably in Canterbury during the last three years. This was especially noticeable in the region of Governor's Bay. Hygienic methods played a big part in the treatment of brown rot. All infected fruit, including that left on the trees and that fallen on the ground, should be destroyed. Mr Carolin was accorded a vote 01 thanks for his address by acclamation.
