NAVY LEAGUE
♦ MEETING OF CANTERBURY BRANCH Indignation at the Government's recent attitude towards the navy was expressed at last night's meeting of the general committee of the Canterbury branch of the Navy League. The secretary said that the Government seemed to overlook the importance of the navy. The Minister for Defence in. a recent statement had talked of the importance of coastal forts, and the meeting felt that instead of expenditure on coastal defences the Government should have four instead of two cruisers. It was felt that the Canterbury branch of the Navy League should be in closer touch with Parliament, and it was resolved that the secretary of the Navy League in Wellington should be written to requesting him'to get in touch with members who could supply information about the defence matters being discussed by the Cabinet. The monthly balance-sheet of the branch showed receipts £74 3s 4d and payments £49 12s id, leaving a credit balance of £24 lis 3d.
