♦— THURSDAY (Before Mr E. D. Mosley, S.M.) CHIMNEY ON FIRE For allowing a chimney to catch fire, Edward Crooke was convicted and discharged. ASSAULT Arthur Sykes, a shearer, aged 33 of Ross (Dr. A. L. Haslam) pleaded guilty to a charge of assaulting Chhibba Bhangui in Madras street. Senior Sergeant Fox said that the assault was 'not a very serious one, and seemed to have been caused by drink. Sykes was fined £2 and costs, in default 14 days' imprisonment with hard labour. He was allowed 24 hours in which the fine. ILLEGALLY ON PREMISES Bernard Victor Cottier, of Barbadoes street, a, labourer, aged 33. pleaded guilty to a charge of being found without lawful excuse, but in circumstances that did not disclose the commission or intent to commit any other offence in enclosed premises m Fitzgerald avenue. He pleaded not guilty to a charge of being idle and disorderly. "He seems to have been a 'Peeping Tom,'" remarked Senior-Sergeant J. Fox, who said that residents of the neighbourhood had been alarmed by a night prowler. The accused was sentenced to three months' imprisonment with hard labour on the first charge, the second being dismissed. -. THEFTS FROM EMPLOYER Peter Johnson, a farm labourer, aged 24, of Dunsandel (Mr R. A. Young) pleaded guilty to a charge of the theft of a towel valued at Is Gd, the property of Russell Wright. Albert Henry Edgcworth, of Lyttelton street, pleaded guilty to a charge of the theft of sums totalling £5, the property of the Dunsandel Tennis Club. The senior-sergeant said that both ( the towel and the money were stolen j from the youths' employer, Mr < Wright, of Dunsandel. Edgeworth was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour, and Johnson was admitted to probation for a period of 12 months. DISOBEDIENCE OF ORDER John Innes Norman McKenzie, of the Belvue Hotel, a salesman, aged 57 (Mr R. A. Young) pleaded guilty to a charge of failure to comply with the terms of a maintenance order. He was sentenced to six months' imprisonment with hard labour, the warrant to be suspended provided the arrears of maintenance are paid off at the rate of £2 a week. REMANDED Percy Hugh Beckenzaum, a traveller, aged 50, of Lower High street, ■was remanded till Tuesday on a charge of disobedience of a maintenance order. Harold Joseph Henry, a shopkeeper, aged 38, of Ferry road, was remanded tiu Tuesday on a charge of breaking and entering the dwelling of Susan Currte and committing theft therein.

BREACH OF AWARD The Inspector of Awards proceeded against John Hunter Shaw, a butcher, of Colombo street, claiming £lO for a breach of the butchers' award in that he failed to close his shop at the required hour. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for the amount claimed, with costs. Dann Bros.. £.td., plumbers, of Christchurch (Mr 11. P. Smith) claimed from G. A. Brunsden, of Tabart street, compositor, the sum of £1 10s for work done and goods supplied in February. Judgment was given for the plaintiff for the amount claimed, with costs. CLAIM FOR MOTOR-CAR REPAIRS Stanley Wheatley, a motor-engineer, of Christchurch, trading as the Richmond Garage (Mr Reed), claimed from Hugh V. Wareing, a farmer, of Ouruhia, £7O 8s 9d, allegedly the balance of an account owing by Wareing to Wheatley, for motor repairs. The defendant admitted part of the liability but claimed that the charges were excessive. Judgment was given for plaintiff for the full amount claimed, with costs.
