The opinion was expressed that support should be given to the museum, but only by way of grants from time to time as thought advisable and not by way of a permanent rate. To endeavour to cope with the increasing corrugation on the road resulting from the shortage of shingle, the engineer urged the necessity of increasing the supply, but it was decided, instead of going on with the purchase of a mechanical elevator and screen to get information about the cost of putting on crushed pit shingle to build up the road and to consider the purchase of some appliance with which to remove the corrugation. The clerk reported having banked £2340 during the past month, largely owing to the support given by ratepayers to the 5 per cent, discount scheme and that the percentage <4ncr cent.)'of the total rates received this year was larger than in any year during the last four. It was decided to serve definite notices to all defaulting ratepayers that action would be taken against mortgagees and landlords unless payment was promptly made.
