—_♦ . ANNUAL MEETING HELD The annual meeting of the Humanitarian and Anti-Vivisection Society of New Zealand was held on Wednesday evening. The annual report, which was presented by Mrs A. D. Houston, Dominion president, stated that the society had succeeded in persuading the city abattoirs to accept a Temple Cox humane killer pistol, which had been used with good results, and it was intended to present a pistol to the Lyttelton abattoirs to introduce humane killing there. The pistols were given with the reservation that they be returned to the society if they were not to be used. During the year the society hail made representations to the Department of Agriculture about the dehorning of adult cattle, and 1 was now affiliated with the International Bureau for the Protection of Animals at Geneva. World Day for Animals, on October 4, had been observed by the society, which had broadcast from station 3YA on the life of St. Francis of Assisi. On the following Sunday an animal sermon had been preached by the Rev. R. Warnock, a member of the society, and in the evening Miss Lucy Cowan had arranged a concert in the Civic Theatre in aid of the funds of the society. The lethal chambers given by the society to the Christchurch City Council and to the Oamaru Borough Council had proved very useful, and during the year another small lethal chamber had been presented tp Miss A. Forrest. The membership of the Kind Deeds Club, stated the report, now stood at 573, and the subscribing adult membership at 84. There were also many honorary members. Votes of thanks were passed to Mr Alan Leslie, F.R.C.V.S., honorary veterinary adviser, Mr H. C. D. van Ascn, honorary solicitor, the Rev. R. Warnock, Mr T. E. Brown, honorary auditor, and to the executive of the society. The election of officers resulted as follows:—Patrons, her Grace the Duchess of Hamilton and Brandon (England), Miss Lind-ax-Hageby (England), the Rt. Rev. D. Houston (re-elected); vice-presidents, Mesdames W. Machin, A. Thompson, and Miss Berthou Brown (all reelected); committee, Mesdames W. T. Menzies, H. F. Gerrard, F. P. Owers, Misses O. Worthington, M. Worthington, M. Barr, O. Barr, Messrs E. 0. Massey, E. A. Brown, and P. E. Brown; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mr R. T. Retallick: honorary veterina'^, advised, Mr Alan Leslie, F.R.C.V.S., honorary solicitor, Mr H. C. D. van Asch; honorary auditor, Mr T. E. Brown.
