OBITUARY

MR FRANCIS PALLISER (SPECIAL TO THE TRISS.) TIMARU, November 15. The death occurred to-day at his home, 83 Beverley road, of Mr Francis Palliser, who had been a resident of Timaru since 1880. Born at Northalton, Yorkshire, on October 9, 1853, Mr Palliser, after learning the building trade, arrived in New Zealand in 1880, coming direct to Timaru. He. was concerned in the erection of many of the largest buildings in the district, including Timaru Boys' High School, Chalmers Church, the Salvation Army Barracks, Timaru Milling Company's building, Dalgety and Company's building, the Waimataitai School, and P. W. Hution and Company's premises. Mr Palliser was a keen supporter of the Liberal Party and was a member of the local committee for many years, and actively assisted the campaign of Sir William liill-Jones. He was a member of St. Mary's Church and was on the building committee when the church tower was built. An enthusiastic angler, he was a member of the council of the Acclimatisation Society when the Timaru and Temuka organisations amalgamated and held office several times. He was also keenly interested in deerMr Palliser was a member of the Timaru Bowling Club and a life member of the Kia Toa Bowling Club. He was one of the earliest members of the South Canterbury Caledonian Society and in the early days took a keen interest in the Artillery Band, which later was merged in the Municipal Band. He was a member of the Manchester Unity Independent Order of Oddfellows. Mr Palliser married Miss Margaret Warwick, of Saltburn, England, who predeceased him about 12 years ago. He is survived by the following sons and daughters:—Messrs T. C. and J. Palliser, Timaru; E. Palliser, Wellington; F. Palliser, Christchureh; Mesdames S. Smith, Auckland; J. Clark, Napier; E. Purvis, Pareora; and Misses M. and K. Palliser, Timaru.

The funeral will take place on Saturday.
