NELSON COLLEGE SPORTS

SOME GOOD PERFORMANCES (SPECIAL 10 THE PRESS.) NELSON, November 12. The Nelson College sports were held in fine weather on Saturday. No records were broken, but one of the best times put up in the funning events was Porter's 56 2-ssec in the quarter-mile, a second off the record established by A. Muir in 1911, and since equalled by K. T. Street in 1928. The same competitor was within an inch of the weight-putting record set up in 1911 by R. T. Grace. Porter had an outstanding day, securing the Senior Cup with 18 points and annexing five championships (including a first equal). The Marjoribanks Shield is shared by Murphy and Martelli, each gaining a second and a third in the two sprint events, 75 and 100 yards. A large field was entered for the junior cup and seven competitors shared points fairly evenly. Kerr and Haase headed the list with 11 points each.

Much interest has been aroused in the newly-instituted old boys' championship, for which a cup has been given by a Wellington old boy. Rowe won the final by a narrow margin. The prizes were presented after the sports, by Mrs C. R. Fell. The championship events were won as follows: Long jump—Murphy, 18ft lOJin. High jump—McMorland, sft 2in, 440 Yards—Porter, time 56 2-ssec. 220 Yards—Porter, time 24 3-ssec. 100 Yards—Porter and Murphy (equal), time Usee.
