OBJECTIONS TO ROAD

REDCLIFFS RESIDENTS WAIT ON BOROUGH COUNCIL At last evening's meeting of the Sumner Borough Council a deputation of nine Redcliffs property owners attended to object to the proposal to take land fronting the estuary, under section 22 of the Public Works Act. The Mayor (Mr W. H. Nicholson) said that it was desired to ensure that *0 land was being taken which belonged to any resident on the foreshore. Mr A. J. Malley, on behalf of a property owner, said that the chief objection was that the proposed road would interfere with the property owner's frontage to the sea. Practically all of these properties had been bougM because of the sea frontage, and if this was taken away the value of the land would be depreciated and in addition property owners would have their peace and quietness disturbed. The construction of a road would also interfere with the launching of boats. The Mayor said that there was a dedicated road at present in existence outside a strip of Crown land, and if the sea wall were continued round the properties would be two chains from the sea. Unless a line was set the owners would find that there was Crown land between the properties and the sea. The frontage along this particular stretch belonged to the whole of the district, not to the individual. Mr H. Hanna asked whether it was proposed to take any private land since the advertisement appearing in the papers had given that impression. The Mayor said that it was Crown land which it was proposed to take. Mr Hanna: Is it possible that this work will not be carried out for years? One of the chief objections is that a road would make it very difficult to launch boats. The Mayor said that while the council could give

no legal undertaking, it recognised that it was only reasonable and fair to provide every possible facility for the launching of boats. The council's idea was to straighten out the front so that any future work conformed to the work at present in hand in the vicinity. Mr Malley thanked the council for receiving the deputation and explaining the situation. After the deputation had withdrawn, Cr. H. E. Kennett moved that: "In conformity with the desire expressed by the deputation that this council agrees to place on record its opinion that should the road be made aa set out along the red line on the plan submitted to the Marine Department, that every possible facility should be afforded to those owners of land fronting the proposed road for the launching and handling of boats to and from the estuary to their section across the road."
