LAWN TENNIS

ENGLISH TEAM AT WELLINGTON PERRY BEATS FRANCE MISS DEARMAN DEFEATS MISS ROUND (PRESS AS3OCIATXOH TBIJSGBAM.) WELLINGTON, November 12. Brilliant shots of the sort which excite a gallery to gasps of wonder abounded in the exhibition tennis matches played at Miramar to-day by the visiting English players, F. J. Perry, G. P. Hughes, Miss D. E. Round, Miss E. M. Dearman, and Miss N. M. Lyle, and three New Zealanders, C. Angas (Christchurch), D. G. France, and R. McL. Ferkins (Wellington). On the whole, however, the tennis was by no means consistently good, though there were two exceptions to this. One was the excellent play of Miss Dearman in her. game against Miss Round, whom she beat in two straight sets, and the other was the magnificent exhibition of doubles play given by Perry and Hughes against France and Ferkins. To these exceptions should be added Miss Round's performance in the mixed double, in which she was partnered by Angas against Hughes and Miss Lyle. There was a moderate northerly wind during the first part of the afternoon, but later this died down, and conditions became almost ideal.

Miss Dear man's Victory What should have been the most interesting match of the afternoon, that between Miss Round and Miss Dearrnan, was spoilt by the former's inability to find touch, her shots persistently just failing to come off. On the day she was far from being the player whose performances this year have entitled her to first place in world ranking, yet no one could fail to admire the fluent perfection of her stroke production. In the singles •against Miss Dearman, Miss Round seemed tired and did not attempt to take the net, not even to follow in behind shots which would have given her an obviously commanding position. Instead she pinned her faith to consistent drives to the side lines, only to find them repeatedly missing their objective. Miss Dearman, on the other hand, was right on her game and had her ground shots perfectly under control. Even on the few occasions when Miss Round was driving well, Miss Dearman especially, as the former preferred to remain on the baseline, had no difficulty in returning her best efforts.

In this match, Miss Dearman showed all the hallmarks of a coming champion. Her driving was consistently good, she volleyed neatly, and her tactics against such an experienced player were entirely adequate. A Great Player Though by no means in top form, Perry in his match against France demonstrated that there is no other player in the world quite like him. Time and again he brought off shots that another player would not even think of attempting. France was playin? splendidly against him, yet even when the score in the second set mounted to 8-9 against him Perry retained supreme confidence. His errors he took as a matter of course, and one felt instinctively that he could still save the set the moment he chose to snap back into action. For all that he came very near to losing it. France had set point at 8-9 and 30-40, but he returned Perry's service over the side line and did not get so close to winning again. The final score was 6-4, 11-9.

Doubles Matches In the men's doubles match, both pairs were on their toes throughout. France and Ferkins were playing well, and Ferkins in particular could bo relied on to find the right spot if any weakness developed in the combination of the opposition; but they could do little to oppose the brilliance of the Englishmen. Perry and Hughes were out to win in quick time, and they had no difficulty in doing so. Hughes's normal service carried a heavy spin, and occasionally he used a reverse service in variation. His ground strokes were more orthodox than Perry's and were very effective, and he volleyed brilliantly. Neither he nor Perry was averse from chasing the smashes of the New Zealanders, and they achieved some spectacular recoveries by doing so. Altogether they gave a fine exhibition of how the doubles game should be played. The mixed doubles was an uninspiring match, made chiefly interesting by the fine work of Miss Round, whose volleying and very effective return of service were a treat to watch. Hughes played some excellent strokes, and Angas's net attack was well in the picture—too much so, at times. Miss Lyle did not do anything in particular to live up to her reputation.

Results:— Angas and Miss Round beat Hughes and Miss Lyle, 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. Perry beat France, 6-4, 11-9. Miss Dearman beat Miss Round, 6-3, 6-4.

Perry and Hughes beat France and Ferkins, 6-3, 6-2.
