MARKETING OF EGGS

NEED FOR QUALITY ON HOME MARKET TRIBUTES PAID TO WORK FOR POULTRY INDUSTRY The need lor the adoption of means to secure a guarantee, of the quality of eggs supplied to the local market was emphasised by Mr S. F. Marshall, Canterbury representative on the Poultry Board and secretary to the egg export committee, in an address at a meeting of directors of Canterbury Co-operative Poultry Producers, Ltd., last evening. Mr Marshall said that he realised lully that the local market was the best market, adding that it seemed rather ironical that while pains were taken to ensure the marketing of the best quality eggs overseas, there were no regulations governing the quality of eggs supplied to the home market. The meeting took the form of a social gathering to make presentations to Mr Marshall and to Mr C. Cussen, Government poultry instructor for the South Island. Tributes were paid to the work done by Messrs Cussen and Marshall in the development of egg export, and in the service of the poultry industry generally. Mr S. Dick was in the chajr. A brief address on the history of the growth of the industry was given by Mr R. W. Hawke, M.P., and Mr F. C. Brown, Chief Government poultry instructor, spoke on the means adopted foi maintaining the quality of eggs exported. Mr Marshall said that he was strongly in favour of definite steps being taken to secure regulation of the quality of eggs sold on the Home market. The adoption of a national mark scheme would do a great deal to place the quality egg wholesale trade on a much better footing than existed today. The Poultry Board, said Mr Marshall, was anxious to do all in its power to assist the export of eggs from all parts of New Zealand. If it found that it was necessary to continue the packing of eggs for export as late as the end of November, it was none the less its duty to see that producers were protected against an unpayable price. The period just after the end of the export season had been a very critical time for producers, and he considered that the board could not use its money in any better way than in continuing export over that critical time so as to ensure a readier stabilisation of prices. This question had not yet been formally discussed by the board, but it had had a good deal of support in informal discussions.

Quality of Eggs Mr F. C. Brown, chief Government Poultry Instructor, commenting on remarks made by the chairman on the large numbers of eggs rejected as unfit for export, said that they could not afford to send anything below the best quality to the overseas market. After each shipment arrived in England, the High Commissioner's office was requested to keep track of the eggs, and watch for any deviations from even quality. New Zealand egg exports had an enviable reputation for quality on the London market, and nothing should be done which might jeopardise that reputation. Anything done for the maintenance of the standard of grading which had been criticised, would earn gratitude in the end. Other speakers stressed the importance of maintaining a high standard of quality, and expressed great satisfaction with the work being done for Die industry by the Government poultry instructors and the export committee. Warm appreciation was expressed of the work of Mr Hawke in pressing for the passing of the Poultry Registration Bill. FOREIGN EXCHANGES (BRITISH OFFICIAL WIHEL.KSS.) KUGIiV. November 10. Par. Nov. 9.
