SUNSHINE AT ADDINGTON

LARGE ATTENDANCE PRETTY FROCKS AND SMART HATS II was a wonderful day at the Addington Trotting Course yesterday, when the New Zealand Metropolitan Trotting Club's spring meeting opened in good weather and the racing provided a series of thrills for the large crowd of patrons. The scene from the members' stand, while the race for the Cup was being run. was one not easily to be forgotten. The stands were crowded, every vantage point on steps and stairs was occupied, even the band stand was invaded, and a serried phalanx of expectant people spread over the lawns and extended in wedgelike formation to the fence, where it joined another great concourse. The excitement was intense. The babel of voices, the shouts, and predictions and exhortations grew louder and wilder as the race proceeded and readied an uproar as the horses passed the judge's box. Then it quickly changed to enthusiastic cheering as Indianapolis, the winner of the most important light harness race in Australia and New Zealand, returned to the birdcage. And the applause continued while the Cup was presented by Sir R. Heaton Rhodes and a battery of can?eras was trained on the winner and his jockey. The executive of the club, with its well known hospitality. entertained many guests at lunch and tea. Amongst those at the president's table at lunch were Mrs J. H. • WOMEN TEACHERS' ASSOCIATION Miss D. Baster presided at the monthly meeting of the Canterbury Women Teachers' Association held at the Chamber of Commerce Hall. Miss M. Thornton, who was lecturer on handwork at the Christchurch Training College, gave an address on "Handwork in relation to the education of children." She said that in the future handwork would probably occupy a still more important place in the school syllabus than it did at present. She emphasised the fact that some children learn more readily by their hands than by their heads, and to illustrate her point she quoted the experience of teachers in a school in a slum area in London. By the teaching of handwork in this well equipped school not only the children but the parents in the district benefited considerably. Miss Thornton mentioned different kinds of hand wark that could be taught in the schools, and elaborated the subject of spinning and weaving, which she thought could with advantage be taught in different stages throughout the school. At the conclusion of the. address many of the teachers present availed themselves ot the opportunity of examining many samples of weaving and watched the working of looms which were suitable for use in schools. On the motion of Miss M. S. Johnston, a vote of thanks was accorded Miss Thornton.

WEDDINGS THOMSON—COOKSON The wedding was celebrated recently at St. Peter's Church, Riccarton, of Miss Dorothy Evelyn Cookson, youngest daughter of Mr and Mrs F. Cookson (Belfast), to Mr Walter Richard Thomson, of Waipara. The ceremony was performed by the Rev. H. T. York, and Mr Clarence Turner was organist. The bride was escorted by her father, her frock being of magnolia craquelle crepe made with a high neckline fastened with a diamante clasp. The long sleeves, tucked at the elbow, were tapered to points over the hands. Her embroidered veil, held in place with sprays of orange blossom, formed a train, and she carried an armlet of cream rosebuds, freesias, and lily of the valley. The bridesmaids were two little nieces of the bridegroom. Miss Margaret Thomson's frock was of pink floral organdie, and Miss Alice Thomson wore a frock of pale green floral organdie. They wore wreaths of velvet leaves to tone, and carried posies of pink rosebuds, anemones, and for-get-me-nots. Mr Roland Fendall was best man. A reception was held at Dixieland, the guests being received by Mrs A. A. Thomson, sister-in-law of the bridegroom, who wore a frock of navy silk marocain and a navy straw hat to tone. Mrs Cookson, the bride's mother, wore a floral silk frock and white hat. For travelling, the bride wore a smart nigger brown tailored suit, a lemon silk blouse, and a, lemon straw hat. Mr and Mrs W. R. Thomson will make their home at Waipara. OURRY—MORI

A quiet wedding was celebrated recently at St. Stephen's Church, Reefton, when Vera, eldest daughter of Mr and Mrs V. Mori, of Recfton, was married to George William, second son of the late Mr and Mrs L. Ourry, formerly of Blackwater. The Rev. W. Bell officiated. The bride was attended by Mrs G. W. Osbourne, and Mr B. Ourry was best man. A reception was held at the home of the bride's parents, and later Mr and Mrs Ourry left for Christchurch en route to Auckland. CHAMPION LADY SWIMMER MARRIED [THE PRESS Special Servico.] AUCKLAND, November 6. Unknown to all but a few of her friends, the champion lady swimmer, Miss Marie Farquhar, was married last week to Mr H. E. Cross, of Howick. The wedding was very quiet, and I only close relatives and friends of the bride and bridegroom were present at the ceremony. Before her marriage, Miss Farquhar had announced that she no longer intended to compete in races; thus New Zealand swimming has lost one of its outstanding figures, because Miss Farquhar won the national 100 yards free-style title in 1931, 1932, and 1933, the 220 yards in 1932, and the 100 yards backstroke from 1931 until this year. She is also the holder cf the New Zealand records for 100 yards, 150 yards, and 220 yards freestyle. The bride is a member of a family keenly interested in swimming. In 1915 her sister, Dorothy, widow of the late Mr E. G. Eliott, a well-known Auckland business man and sportsman, won the national 100 yards freestyle championship. It is striking evidence of the progress made in New Zealand that Mrs Eliott won the championship at Napier in Imin 20 2-sscc, whereas Miss Marie Farquhar was successful there in 1933 in lmin 6 4-ssec. Her Dominion record of the last-named is even better, lmin 4 4-5 sec.

GOLDEN WEDDING MR AND MRS J. NORTON Mr and Mrs J. Norton ("Branxholine," Timaru) celebrated their golden wedding anniversary in the Trinity Hall, Timaru, with their fam* iiy, relatives, and friends. Mrs Norton, nee Sarah Beer, of Devonshire, arrived in New Zealand in the steam ship Florida, in 1884, and was married at the Temuka Presbyterian Church to ;Mr John Norton, who had arrived in New Zealand in 1881. The Rev. J. Maxwell (then relieving clergyman) performed the ceremony. When he arrived in New Zealand, Mr Norton was employed by his brother-in-law, Mr W. Wright, on the "Bluegum Park" estate, at Rangitata Valley, till 1898, when he purchased 404 acres at Pleasant Point, which he named "Prospect Farm." This land, which was all in one paddock, during the following 19 years, was subdivided, drained, improved, and built on, till it became known as a model farm of South Canterbury. In 1919 Mr Norton retired from farming and with his wife and daughter left to reside in Timaru. Mr Norton has always been a keen supporter of the Presbyterian Church, having been ordained an elder nearly 50 years ago, an office which he still holds in Trinity Church, Timaru. All the members of Mr and Mrs Norton's family were with them on Saturday, and included Mrs A. L. Bishop ("Silverbrook," Totara Valley), the Rev. W. H. Norton ("The Manse." Tapanui), Mrs D. M. Skinner ("Atwell Farm," Totara Valley), Miss Eva Norton (Rhodes street), Mr C. T. Norton (Mount Nessing), Mrs Oliver Parr ("The Kowais," Raincliff), Mrs Robert Mclhvain (Balclutha), and Mr W. H. Norton (Opihi). The hall was decorated with arum lilies and banksia roses and the breakfast table was bright with Iceland poppies and anemones. Before the festivities were commenced, a brief service was conducted by the Rev. A. J. H. Dow. Mrs Norton wore a black crepe de chine frock, a black hat with a posy of flowers under the brim, and a black fox fur, the gift of her children. Her small grand-daughter, Bessie Norton, presented her with a bouquet of Iceland poppies and freesias, and she received a lucky horseshoe from her grandson, Colin Parr. A musical programme was enjoyed during the afternoon.

STREET DAY APPEAL ♦ ST. JOHN FREE AMBULANCES To-morrow the SI. John Ambulance Association and Brigade will hold their annual street day appeal for funds to maintain the great organisation they have so efficiently built up, for no other purpose than to provide first-aid ambulances for suffering humanity. These services not only include a modern free motor ambulance transport service and more than 50 free first-aid depots, but also the voluntary services of members of the brigade, a band of men and women who uncomplainingly do their best to help to alleviate human suffering. Classes in lirst-aid and home nursing are continually held in order to supply the increasing demand for trained helpers, and upwards of 20,000 persons have received training in these branches of the work. All sections of the adult community, I regardless of creed, are welcome members of the brigade, where training is given free. Cadets, between the ages of 12 and 18 years, also are given an interesting and valuable training in a special division, and the St. John Ambulance Association certificates are issued to all who are successful in passing the qualifying examinations. Funds are needed for this work, for although a very valuable transport service is already installed it requires money to meet the cost of upkeep, necessitated by the ever-increasing number of calls, which last year reached the amazing total of 3993. An urgent appeal, too, is made for badge sellers, and all who can help are asked to telephone 30-383 and give their names to the secretary. The slogan, "1000 helpers for £1000" must be realised to-morrow.
