LEAVE TO APPEAL SOUGHT
(rucss ASSOCIATION TELEGRAM.) DUNEDIN, November 6. Information lias been received from the solicitors acting for John Christie Spence. who was recently convicted in the Supreme Court in this c'itv, that an application has been forwarded to the registrar of the Court of Appeal for leave to appeal against the sentence, which has recently been the subject of considerable correspondence in the newspapers. Spence was convicted on a charge of rape, and was sentenced to seven vears' imprisonment. together with a flogging of 15 strokes. No recent case in this oitv has aroused such public interest and controversy.
