A decision to urge still inure strongly the need for raising the embargo imposed on the import of livestock into New Zealand from Great Britain was made by the Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Pig Breeders' Association at a meeting at Stratford. Members considered the embargo was doing harm to New Zealand, • both internally, in its breeding of all classes of stock, and externally in its relation with Great Britain. The Geographic Board, which was responsible, among other things, for attempting to change the name of Tua Marina into Tuamarino without the consent of the inhabitants, has apparently suffered a "change of heart," states the "Marlborough Express." The suggestion was made to the board some time ago that in names like Redwoodtown, Renwick-! town, etc., the suffix "town" should be dropped; but it has replied that! until the wishes of the residents can i be known it will not take any; action. ! I Commenting on Australian taxation of companies, the chairman of the South British Insurance Company, Sir George Elliot, said at the annual meeting of the company at Auckland, that the interests of New Zealand shareholders were seriously affected. Those with investments in Australian companies, he said, had been forced to submit to tax assessments by the Federal authorities, based on the proportion of profit derived from Australia. According to a Federal Act, which was by no means a new measure, every shareholder not resident in Australia was liable to this assessment, but in practice it was only those receiving dividends from Australian companies -who were eaugnt in the net, for the very good reason that there was no way of drawing in the others. ''We believe that in Great Britain shareholders in companies operating in Australia contested the assessment," said Sir George, "and are now enjoying complete freedom from this vexatious tax. If this i; so, it seems unfair that New Zealand investors should be taxed while British investors are exempt."
